Toaplan rights holder Tatsujin is holding a "special commemorative broadcast" on the Game Center Mikado YouTube channel from 8 pm (Japanese time) on Friday, October 4th. During the broadcast, the company will also "be delivering the latest information on the 40th anniversary of Toaplan Arcade Masterpiece." You can read more about Tatsujin's plans for the anniversary here. Toaplan was established in 1979, but its gaming division wouldn't come into being until 1984. Its first two titles were Jongō (1984) and Performan (1985), but it was Tiger-Heli (also 1985) which put the firm on the map as a master of the shmup genre. Other notable Toaplan shooters include Slap Fight, Truxton, Hellfire, Zero Wing and Batsugun. It filed for...
While eager fans await news on Amanda the Adventurer 2, its predecessor is set to launch for PlayStation and Xbox platforms just in time for Halloween. It will also receive a free update on Nintendo Switch. Amanda the Adventurer seemingly came out of nowhere when it became a viral hit horror sensation but it had to be developed by someone — MANGLEDmaw Games, a small indie studio out of Hamilton, Ontario. (Hello from Ottawa!) Amanda the Adventurer begins with Riley Park inheriting their reclusive aunt's house. Riley explores what was left behind in the house. In the attic, Riley finds an old television set and VCR with a stack of VHS tapes containing episodes of a children's cartoon that appears to be from the early '00s. The cartoon is...
Resident Evil fans are a determined bunch. Since the release of the original Resident Evil in 1996, they have been hard at work trying to find out all they could about its cheesy yet endearing FMV opening, which has included identifying the actors chosen to portray the individual members of S.T.A.R.S. In the past, members of the game's community were able to identify and interview the actors who starred as Chris Redfield, Albert Wesker, Barry Burton, and Rebecca Chambers, and later made contact with the actress who portrayed Jill Valentine (who has, unfortunately, declined to share their experience publicly so far). But there has always been one last person that nobody could identify: the actor who portrayed the bandana-wearing...
French company Dab Motors is producing a special version of its DAB 1α electric bike which takes inspiration from Nintendo's Atomic Purple Game Boy Color. Costing a cool €14,900 (over $16,500) to pre-order, the vehicle features transparent purple bodywork, custom handlebars with Nintendo-style controls and a screen which mimics the look of the Game Boy Color's LCD display. Fashioned by Dab Motors' bespoke service branch, the bike will also include an actual Game Boy Color cartridge which has been modified to act as the DAB 1α's starter key. It will also benefit from secret cheat codes, one of which will unlock a speed boost. You'll also be able to unlock themes for the display and sound effects. These codes will be included in a...
Quintet's classic SNES RPG Illusion of Gaia (also known as Illusion Of Time) has just received a new fan translation 30 years after it launched in North America. Like so many RPG localizations of the period, the English script was pretty awkward – but thankfully, a fan by the name of L Thammy has taken the Japanese dialogue and given it another pass, resulting in a translation that's far closer to the original and reads better, too (thanks, Retro Dodo). "In September of 1994, Illusion of Gaia made its North American debut," reads the project page for this new translation. "The story was notable for being much darker than the other RPGs Nintendo was allowing at the time. Despite a softening of the themes, the plot went to dark and...
Athena's shoot 'em up creation kit series Dezaemon started life on the Famicom, and allowed players to create their own shooters. It would later expand to the SNES, Saturn and N64 – with the latter almost getting a 64DD expansion update that would have massively increased its scope, allowing for larger games, no limits on image creation and the ability to save multiple games to disk. It would also have supported mouse control. Sadly, this functionality never saw the light of day, mainly because the 64DD was a commercial dud – but thankfully, because the data was included on the cartridge version of the game, it is playable – and thanks to the efforts of the community, it's now possible to do so in English. "Zoinkity has provided us...
This week's Arcade Archives release has been revealed as Nichibutsu's 1981 space shooter Moon Shuttle (as reported by Famitsu). It will be released tomorrow (October 3rd) on the PS4 and the Nintendo Switch eShop in Japan and is also expected to come to some Western storefronts shortly after (if previous releases are anything to go by). Moon Shuttle first entered the arcades in the early 80s and was available at the time as a standup cabinet, which could be played with one or two players (albeit not simultaneously). It is one of many space shooters released by the company during this period with "Moon" in the title and has often been compared to Konami's influential sidescroller Scramble, which was released the same year. The game...
We've given the SuperSega project a fair amount of coverage in recent months, and with good reason – who isn't excited about the prospect of an all-in-one system that runs Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn, Mega CD and Dreamcast software, all via FPGA? Since the project broke cover, there's been a wave of skepticism surrounding it – and again, this is very understandable. The team behind the venture hasn't shown anything concrete as yet, despite announcing that it would be opening pre-orders soon. The team also seems to be curiously relaxed about any legal challenge from Sega regarding the name of the system, and the fact that it uses the Sega logo in its branding. As we stated previously, we were recently offered the chance to hold a...
I'm not usually one to get invested in Early Access games. I'd much rather just experience the finished product, when I can experience the full extent of the vision of the developers. However, Spiders' GreedFall had a particularly powerful effect on me (I actually ended up buying it three times over), and so I felt an urge to drop into GreedFall II at the earliest opportunity. The first thing to understand is that this Early Access is, apparently, really early access. Spiders seems to be going around claiming that there's only around 30% of the game in there at this stage. And given that we are talking about the Eurojank RPG space, with a developer with B-tier resources trying to produce something of the scope of A-tier developers, you...

WipEout turns 30 next year, and the celebrations are already underway – but how about an official Lego set to really kick things off? That's what could potentially happen, as a fan has submitted a kit design to Lego's Ideas portal, where fan-made projects have a chance of being turned into legitimate products. "Ever since my first encounter with the game on PlayStation 1 in 1997, I've been captivated by the mesmerizing ship designs featured in the Wipeout series," says Bryan77233. "I had a lot of fun creating this project, gathering inspiration from both Studio Liverpool's official concept art, and fan-made illustrations." Based on the iconic FEISAR FX400, the kit idea comprises 1905 parts and weighs 1.8 kg (64.7 oz). "While my...
Nintendo is famously protective of its intellectual property and has a history of suing content creators who it feels have overstepped the mark. However, its latest move feels particularly heavy-handed, as it has issued a copyright strike against a YouTube channel that reviews emulation handhelds. Retro Game Corps, in case you didn't know, is an excellent channel with over half a million subscribers which covers many different retro gaming systems, but its main focus is modern-day portable devices from the likes of AYANEO, Anbernic and Retroid which are capable of emulating classic games from yesteryear. As you might imagine, many of these systems run games for consoles like the NES, SNES, Game Boy, N64 and even Wii U, and the...
We've seen a sudden outburst of affection for classic fighting games recently, helped in no small part by Capcom's efforts to revive its '90s titles for a new audience. You'd assume there would be just as much demand for a collection related to Namco's legendary Tekken series, but franchise director Katsuhiro Harada has poured cold water on such hopes. Speaking to the TheGamer alongside designer Michael Murray, Harada says he doesn't think there's the same kind of desire for old 3D fighting games as there is for 2D ones: Murray does give a little more hope but is still skeptical that older Tekken games would be much fun to play today: What do you think? Do 3D fighting games really age worse than 2D ones? Would you be willing to pay...
WeskMods is very close to finalising his unofficial Sega Saturn Slim modification. The mod is described as "all but complete" and will offer support for the Fenrir internal ODE. It will also support the Satiator and Saroo, although the latter will require the cartridge slot to be repositioned, but this is now optional. "The provisions for relocation still exist if you're up for the challenge, but if not, the cart port cover really adds to the design overall," says WeskMods. "The icing on the cake is ArielAces working on super detailed decals and stickers for the final unit," he adds. "I should have all the parts for the final assembly in the coming weeks."
If you've been floating around the forum in the past year, AKNES might be a name you recognise, having supported users with their controller woes and given away a number of controllers and accessories. Earlier this year they moved most of their day to day operations over to Discord, and are today launching a new reviewer development program based on feedback and discussions within the community. As both a reseller and an avenue of testing and support for brands including 8BitDo, GuliKit, and RetroFlag, amongst others, AKNES plans to offer product samples over a period of six months to help new creators get into the reviewing space. Applying for the program will require you join the AKNES Discord server and submit a review of anything...
Square Enix has released a series of die-cast, scale-model versions of some of Sega's most famous video game consoles. Part of the company's "Bright Arts" series, each one is "crafted in great detail and [has] a heavy, impressive presence," according to the company. "The controller is also included, making it a great interior decoration item." Six items are included in the range. You've got the Mega Drive (Japanese), Saturn (Japanese), white Saturn (Japanese) and Dreamcast (Japanese / North America), as well as the North American Genesis and the European Dreamcast. Retailing for 4,400 yen ($30) each, they launch in Japan on January 25th, 2025. Square Enix's Bright Arts range also includes Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Shin...
Developer Truant Pixel has shown off its upcoming arcade space combat title Rogue Flight, which appears to take a generous amount of inspiration from classic on-rail blasters like Star Fox. Boasting a "retro 80's-90's analogue-video art style" which is "inspired by the golden age of prestige anime", Rogue Flight will offer "stylish high-speed arcade action set across 9 unique stages" and a "branching narrative path with multiple endings." You'll be able to pull off high-risk maneuvers and get to grips with multiple weapon options, and there will be "over 100" unlockable liveries so you can personalize your craft. Furthermore, the game will offer an arcade mode as well as "unlockable roguelite game modes which offer greater risks...
If you missed out on the Kickstarter for PixelHeart's Ghosts 'N Goblins-esque platformer GladMort earlier this year, and have been kicking yourself ever since, then we have some good news for you. Last Friday, the publisher launched a bunch of pre-order options on its website, giving players the chance to secure copies of the game for the Neo Geo & Sega Dreamcast ahead of its official launch later this year. Gladmort, in case you're in need of a quick refresher, is a brand new title, developed by the Neotris developer Chips on Steroids, and a small team comprised of the artists Jérome Lignier and Lionel Pigaglio and the musician Stef Sirrah. It follows a story about a kingdom besieged by undead monsters who, in a last-ditch effort...
If you've been following the development of the upcoming Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, then you'll be aware that the late Akira Toriyama's artwork has been updated for this new release, with female characters generally showing less skin than before. The character that has been impacted the most is the female Warrior, who now wears clothing underneath her (admittedly revealing) armored bikini. Speaking at the recent Tokyo Game Show, series creator Yuji Horii and former Shonen Jump editor Kazuhiko Torishima (a key figure in the inception of the first game) touched upon the delicate topic of censorship in a surprisingly candid exchange. The conversion has been translated by Valute News, and sees Horii admit that he is confused as to...
After 36 years, Namco's gory 1988 arcade beat 'em up Splatterhouse is finally coming to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis port, via an unofficial fan port. Monster Bath Games, the developer of games like Deathwish Enforcers and Guardgrave, recently announced over the weekend that it had taken a 2-week break from working on its own titles to experiment with creating a fanmade port of an arcade title to Sega Mega Drive / Genesis using @earok's Scorpion Engine. For this, it decided to opt for Splatterhouse, a game that was previously ported to the PC Engine/Turbo Grafx-16 and FM-Towns computer in the early 90s. This game skipped the Sega console at the time, with only its sequels Splatterhouse 2 and Splatterhouse 3 getting an official release...
