Flynn's Arcade, the console publisher behind titles like Donut Dodo and Murtop has announced it will be releasing Pixel Games' Cash Cow DX on the Nintendo Switch eShop on September 26th. The game will cost £5.99 / $5.99 / €5.99 and will feature a 20% discount for the first couple of weeks. So, if you've been waiting for this to land on the Nintendo Switch, following its initial release on Steam earlier this year, now may be the time to finally give it a try. As for what Pixel Games' has planned next in terms of new projects, we already know that it is currently in the process of developing the third game in its "Class of 1983 arcade trilogy" Looney Landers for Steam, which borrows inspiration from classic titles like Sky Skipper, Sky...
Necromancers can communicate with the dead, which is a heavy cross to bear at times. But Necro Story isn't all doom and gloom. It's quite lighthearted, as you become an "evil" necromancer who prefers undead shenanigans to saving the world. Using minions to outsmart your foes, you can grab their souls to power up your team. Today, developer Rablo Games announced that Necro Story will be released in early October — just in time for spooky season! To celebrate the announcement, there is a new (rhyming) release date trailer. In Necro Story, journey to the underworld as Jaimus the Necromancer. Cast spells, raise skeleton armies, sign pacts with demons, and capture souls — all while guided by a mischievous ghost named Vivi. The whimsical...
Whispers of the Luminaries is an Aussie-developed idol-themed murder mystery game inspired by the Famicom Detective Club and Ace Attorney series. It is about finding hope in the darkest of times. Following the release of the game's demo via Steam, its Kickstarter page gained hundreds of followers waiting for the campaign to begin. And it will start soon: the opportunity to back the game will begin in early October. Whispers of the Luminaries puts you in the shoes of a detective, following four idol trainees as they try to become superstars. The game gets darker the more you uncover the mystery. Nothing is as it seems, and you're about to head down a rabbit hole. The game is a hybrid visual novel and adventure game that blends...
There are so many games today that claim to take inspiration from the PS1 era that it's often hard for them to stand out and grab people's attention. Retro visuals typically aren't enough anymore to win people over on their own, with audiences also expecting a killer premise to make them drop what they are doing and get invested. And in the case of Cold & Afraid, we think the developers Sunamii Games have absolutely crushed it, with the studio pitching its latest game to players as essentially what "If Squaresoft Made A Law & Order Game in 1999". If you're anything like us, this description along with the accompanying video of a young woman exploring gritty PS1-style environments has probably stopped you in your tracks and you're...
Pixel Games, the developer of Donut Dodo and Cash Cow DX, now has a Steam page up for its next arcade-inspired title. Looney Landers, as the project is called, will be the third game in what the developer is now describing as "the Class of 1983 arcade trilogy" and was first teased back in June on Twitter. There it was described as "a whacky single-screen arcade party game, for one or two players (P1 vs CPU / P1 vs P2)", with the developer sharing a bunch of screenshots featuring a mischievous clown named Freddy, various silly toys and contraptions, and a bunch of small skydiving humans. Speaking to Sebastian Kostka, the person behind Pixel Games, later that same month, he told us that the game originally started as a technical...
The first trilogy of Pixel Pulps from LCB Game Studio had phenomenally pulpy narratives and retro graphics. Each game (Mothmen 1966, Varney Lake, Bahnsen Knights) stood solidly on its own, but if you play all three you also follow the story of a paranormal investigator attached to each. I deeply love and understand the trilogy's narratives, and I've been waiting for more. A couple of weeks ago, the development studio announced the fourth title in the Pixel Pulps series, Grizzly Man. I was perfectly happy with that news. I could have lived off those scraps of information for months. Then: surprise! The entire next trilogy of games was revealed in the latest issue of Edge magazine. Again, the narratives speak to me. The second Pixel...
With its series of Pixel Pulps games, LCB Game Studio is bringing something fresh to the visual novel genre. The games look retro (and the stories are retro-pulpy), but they don't quite play like a retro title might because different minigames are incorporated into each game. For example, you can try your luck at impossible solitaire in Mothmen 1966, catch fish in Varney Lake, and try to survive a car chase with a cult in Bahnsen Knights. Recently, all three games were compiled into a physical collection—but that doesn't stop me from craving more! The developer has been teasing the fourth title in the series on social media – placing it solidly in the slasher genre – and today it was officially announced: Grizzly Man! While part of the...
If you're someone who prides themselves as being something of an aficionado when it comes to the world of run 'n' gun games, then you likely won't want to miss out on G Warrior — a new indie action game from Liao Kai, the developer of the incredible 2023 shoot 'em up GanaBlade. G Warrior is described on Steam as "a retro hardcore action shooting game" and sees players take control of one of two heroes as they embark on a mission to destroy an army of robots and aliens standing in their way. It features some lovely, colorful retro-inspired pixel art, a range of cool weapons and skills to unlock including shotguns, lasers, and shields, and a chiptune soundtrack reminiscent of the types of soundtracks you'd likely hear on NES back in the...
It's fitting that a game titled Shine On, My Little Sun has an almost sparkly quality to it. I think it's the nighttime setting that does it, you can see all the stars dancing against the inky-dark sky. Announced today, the game is described as a unique take on an interactive fairy tale and follows a settlement of people in a post-apocalyptic world, surviving permanent nighttime with the help of a single star being held in a lighthouse. A reveal trailer is up and the Steam page has launched, but there's no release date for the time being. Shine On, My Little Sun is a coming-of-age narrative game about making impactful choices and meeting diverse people who have thrived in a world that was nearly ended. It is described as a tale of...
Women-Led Games may be one of the shorter showcases this weekend, but don't let that fool you: there are some really incredible titles from some really incredible people here. The show is hosted by Lianna Ruppert. I'm not going to lie, I've followed her on Twitter for what has to be years now. She's smart, funny, quick-witted, talented, hard-working, and quite honestly an inspiration for women working in the games industry – especially those of us with chronic illness. So that's what you'll find at the Women-Led Games showcase: a wide variety of inspiring women making a wide variety of interesting games! Game highlights Sunnyside (RainyGames) This look at farming/life Sunnyside takes a look at the cooking system of the game. Designed...
Indie outfit Dawdling Dog has revealed that it is working on a new 'Zelda-like' action adventure by the name of Ephemeral Legend. Inspired by the Game Boy Zelda entries, the game offers "a massive world dripping with secrets for you to uncover" and features "nods to both modern and classic inspirations." You'll be expected to "navigate perplexing puzzles, triumph over perilous dungeons, and wield an arsenal of fun tools as you explore the waking dream around you," adds the game's Steam page. There's no release date as yet, but the developer has confirmed it plans to release the game on consoles at some point. If you like the look of what you see, Ephemeral Legend will be playable at the Central Coast Comicon this weekend.
If you're a fan of series like Sonic Adventure and want a similar slice of speed, you'll be pleased to hear Spark the Electric Jester 3 is on its way to the Switch. Following a PC release in 2022, this high-speed 3D action platformer starring Spark is now "coming soon" to Nintendo's hybrid device. It's being ported by FreakZone games and there's no specific release date just yet. The Spark series, created by Lake Feperd (an individual known for Sonic fan games), originally started with a successful 2D entry in 2017 and was followed by a 3D sequel in 2019. The third outing continues directly where the second game left off: On Steam, the third game has "overwhelmingly positive" reviews, with a lot of user reviews comparing it to...
A Steam demo was released yesterday for the next PC game from the developers Melos Han-Tani and Marina Kittaka — the creators of Anodyne, Anodyne 2, Even the Ocean, and Sephonie. Angeline Era is a 3D homage to classic action role-playing games like Ys & Hydlide and is scheduled to release sometime in 2025. It sees players exploring a land of Angels and Fae, uncovering treasures, and battling enemies to seek out an ancient truth. The recently released demo features a lengthy preview of its main campaign, introducing players to the "bump-slash" combat (which is influenced by Ys), and also includes a beta version of the game's upcoming arcade mode. All of this is presented in a charmingly blocky style that seems to us to be a mix between...
If you have an affinity for the late '80s and early-to-mid '90s anime aesthetic and retro first-person shooters, then, boy, do we have the game for you. Mullet Madjack is an upcoming Steam game from the Brazilian developer Hammer95 that is releasing later this month on May 15th and only recently came to our attention, thanks to its impressive launch date trailer. It mixes frantic gunplay with phenomenal cyberpunk visuals and hearkens back to a time when streaming sites were non-existent and anime was primarily distributed on VHS tape. The game takes in 2090 in a world where man and the internet have merged into one and where people need a sudden burst of dopamine every 10 seconds to survive. Players step into the role of a moderator...
