Zanrai Interactive has just shown off Visegunne, a new shmup featuring big robots, lovely 2D visuals and a strong single-player story. The game is listed as "coming soon" on Steam and is billed as a "non-bullet-hell shoot 'em up where explosive action unfolds around you." Boasting "narrative-driven missions, a vast arsenal of weapons, and over-the-top visual effects," Visegunne sees you "pilot a soul-powered combat mech as you protect the colonies from a pro-Earth terrorist conspiracy." Here's some more info: If this all sounds like it's right up your street, then be sure to wishlist the game on Steam.
Over the weekend, Team17 have officially given the thumbs up to Project X: Light Years — a new follow-up to its 1992 horizontal shooter for Amiga that is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. When the campaign's organizer, the "big Amiga fan" Retronix originally launched the project, it stated in the FAQ that it believed the project could go ahead without Team17 due to the name presumably no longer being trademarked due to the countless games called Project X on Steam and because of a belief that Team17 was unable to claim copyright on the project because of its use of generic traits associated with the shoot 'em up genre. Nevertheless, it claimed that it had been trying to reach out to the studio, to get explicit approval anyway and...
KOHACHI STUDIO Co., Ltd has announced that the Tenchu and the Way of the Samurai developer Acquire will co-develop the Metal Slug spiritual successor Black Finger Jet, helping to bring the game's mix of 2D-pixel art and 3D backgrounds to audiences. Acquire has previous experience developing games that contain a mixture of 2D and 3D assets having previously worked on the Octopath Traveler series along with Square Enix Business Division 11, so this seems like a smart decision for the small team giving them some additional help to realize their aspirations for the project. The game's director Shinano Ishiguro made the above announcement on Twitter earlier today in a short statement that also revealed that a new trailer will be released...
Utopia Must Fall — a stylish new vector-based shoot em' up from the developer Pixeljam Games — launched on Steam Early Access a few days ago and it is well worth checking out if you have a fondness for arcade classics like Missile Command, Asteroids, and Space Invaders. The game sees players put in control of the defense of humanity's last surviving metropolis which is under threat from mysterious alien forces (as well as other miscellaneous bits of space debris). Armed with a railgun, and a small stockpile of nukes, your job is to protect the city from incoming collisions in order to fight another day, with the option being offered between waves to pick from a series of upgrades to better prepare for the next assault. From what...
A Steam page has just been launched for a promising new Kirby-esque platformer called SANAE's Sylphid Breeze, which is a fangame based on Team Shanghai Alice's popular shoot 'em up series Touhou Project. The game is being developed by the Japanese developer sorehodoh and is an expanded remake of a title that they originally distributed at Comiket85 in Japan back in 2013. It sees players take control of Sanae Kochiya — one of the recurring characters from Touhou Project who made her first appearance as a boss in the tenth title Mountain of Faith — with the goal being to guide the priestess across a dangerous land filled with Yōkai. To do this, players will be able to use the priestess's ability to absorb characters into her umbrella...
KRUMB Games and publisher Judatone Studios are bringing Mekkablood: Quarry Assault to Steam, and it's a release that should be of interest to seasoned MechWarrior fans. Set in the year 2082, Mekkablood places you in the role of "grizzled former trucker turned robojockey" Bill, who is involved in a dispute with TorxCorp over the mining rights to the valuable resource Fluxiam-7. The evil corp has not only stolen Bill's "treasured figurines" but also his girlfriend, Beth. Mekkablood features "classic boomer shooter gameplay that's fast paced, and requires keys to move forward," as well as "balanced weapons" and loads of secrets to uncover. If you like what you see, you can add Mekkablood to your Steam wishlist now.
Classic arcade racing games might have fallen out of favor somewhat in recent times, but that doesn't mean developers have completely ignored them – as the existence of Perfect Lap proves. Created by Majestic Technology, it's described as a mix between Auto Modellista And Ridge Racer Type 4, and is headed to Steam in the not-too-distant future. Combining the former's cel-shaded look with the latter's tight controls, this could well turn out to be something of a winner for fans of this genre. The developer has shared various videos of the game's development but is keen to stress that it remains a work in progress:
Valve's own operating system "SteamOS", based on a specific Linux distribution called Arch Linux, alongside their own Wine fork titled "Proton", have both opened up the doors for modern and AAA gaming on Linux machines, with their OS being developed specially for their Steam Deck handheld device. Since the release of the Steam Deck and SteamOS, many have wondered if the company could consider releasing their OS for general use as a distributable Linux distro to be installed in other devices and computers outside the Steam Deck. That could all be a reality very soon, as Valve's designed Lawrence Yang has confirmed in an interview with The Verge that they are planning on bringing SteamOS support for other handheld devices in the market...
Alfa System's 2005 arcade bullet hell Castle of Shikigami III could be coming to Steam later this year, thanks to a new crowdfunding campaign that launched at the end of last month in Japan on the website Camp-fire.jp. Castle of Shikigami III originally debuted in the arcades back in the mid-2000s and was later ported to PC, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii, with the Wii release coming to North America via Aksys Games in 2008. Now the company Cosmo Machia (who was also recently behind the Triggerheart Exelica rerelease) is planning to bring it to Steam and is aiming to release it in December 2024, should it hit its goal. The company wants ¥3,000,000 to make the project a reality and is currently on ¥2,058,100 as of the time of writing...
Mega Cat Studios announced earlier this week that it will be bringing the Genesis / Mega Drive shmup ZPF to Steam, allowing PC players who don't happen to have a Mega Drive knocking about a chance to experience the game upon release. The Steam version of the game will be available to backers via a new $15 tier called "Digital Revelry", which also comes with a digital bundle including a manual, poster, OST, and artbook. It can also be added to previous physical reward pledges too, so you don't need to back the project again if you've already supported the project in the past. According to the press release that went out to publications to accompany the exciting news, those who choose to add a Steam code to their existing pledge will...
Fallout has been a steadily growing RPG franchise ever since its first release back in 1997 for Windows and MS-DOS, with the sequel Fallout 2 following closely just a year later in 1998. During its first two iterations, the franchise had very similar gameplay to that of the Diablo franchise, in it being an isometric view game with some dungeon-crawler like elements, with the player going through different environments, finding items and fighting enemies along the way to accomplish their goals. It wasn't until 10 years later, with the release of Fallout 3, that the franchise switched formats to a real-time RPG in a 1st person perspective with full 3D environments, paving the way for the rest of the franchise to follow in this format...
The Steam Deck's success continues to be felt throughout gaming as a whole, and this week, Linux users achieved another milestone when it comes to gaming in the grand OS picture. Around a year ago, back in August, 2023, Linux overtook MacOS as the 2nd most used OS for gaming, according to Steam's public data, and with Steam's latest price cuts, better offerings and the allure of current computer games and almost everything emulation-related running on a portable device, more users are drawn into the Steam Deck. Steam has just released its latest survey in regards to their service and how games are being played in multiple devices, which covers the latest changes throughout May, 2024, and within it, when looking at the specific "OS...

Colorgrave's Veritus hits Steam this July, and is yet another indie title which uses the Game Boy Zeldas as a point of inspiration. The game takes place in the castle of the "god of shadow", the titular Veritus. "Persevere through monsters and mysteries lurking in every corner," reads the game's Steam page. "Prepare to leave camp and journey into the castle's lonely halls by collecting resources and equipment to make it out alive." Weapons and tools help you combat enemies and solve puzzles, and you'll be able to recover at various safe havens located within the fortress. You'll need to collect fragments of a key which have been scattered throughout the castle, and use the completed artifact to open Veritus' throne room and reveal...
We've seen quite a few indie games lean hard into the Game Boy aesthetic, but few have looked as downright gorgeous as Yolk Heroes: A Long Tamago. The recently-launched Steam game is developed by 14 Hours Productions and is described as "part digital pet game, part RPG adventure, and part casual Idle game," with the aim being to "raise a little hero from an egg to battle the Dark Lord and bring peace back to the land." Just like the famous Tamagotchi series, Yolk Heroes focuses a lot of its time on getting you to raise a creation from egg to fully-grown adult – but the catch here is that you're evolving a hero, not a bug-eyed monster. As well as looking after your hero and making sure they get all of the right training to do...
After a little more than three years of exclusivity with the Epic Games Store, Square Enix has decided to bring their beloved Kingdom Hearts franchise to Steam. The whole saga headed to Steam includes Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 HD ReMix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Kingdom Hearts III and its Re Mind DLC, with the full collection packed together under the Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece label. They'll all be releasing the same day, on June 13th.
Indie outfit Dawdling Dog has revealed that it is working on a new 'Zelda-like' action adventure by the name of Ephemeral Legend. Inspired by the Game Boy Zelda entries, the game offers "a massive world dripping with secrets for you to uncover" and features "nods to both modern and classic inspirations." You'll be expected to "navigate perplexing puzzles, triumph over perilous dungeons, and wield an arsenal of fun tools as you explore the waking dream around you," adds the game's Steam page. There's no release date as yet, but the developer has confirmed it plans to release the game on consoles at some point. If you like the look of what you see, Ephemeral Legend will be playable at the Central Coast Comicon this weekend.
EA's Desert Strike series was one of '90s gaming's most popular franchises, and spanned a wide range of systems, including the Mega Drive, SNES, Game Boy and PS1. Sadly, since the launch of Nuclear Strike back in 1997, the series has remained dormant – but, as is so often the case in these situations, fans are filling the void. In the case of the Strike series, we have Colin Karpfinger to thank; he's been working on Cleared Hot for the past few years, having formally announced it back in 2021. The game is still listed as 'coming soon' on Steam, but Karpfinger has been posting regular updates on his social media showing its progress. "CLEARED HOT is a top-down helicopter shooter with unscripted physics and light tactical elements,"...

If you want to back the project, you can visit its crowdfunding page here. There are quite a few different tiers available with the cheapest way of getting the game at the moment being a digital copy for Steam priced at €12, which also comes with a digital version of the game's soundtrack. Further down the list, there are also US, PAL, and Japanese versions available for Dreamcast, as well as a bunch of options for both the Neo Geo MVS and AES. Here's a synopsis of the story taken from the game's...
Oh wow is this news a blast from the past. Slitherine – the developer/publisher of all kinds of niche wargames and strategy titles, has dipped deep into the retro bucket to drop the classic Warlords and Close Combat titles on Steam. Both games were released on GOG previously, so I suspect most fans already have the games, but Steam is a convenient platform for obvious reasons, so this is actually pretty good news. For those that aren't familiar with them: Warlords is a series of turn-based fantasy strategy games that started back in 1990. And they're Australian! They were the work of Steve Fawkner, who would later on go on to create the exceptional Puzzle Quest. They might not look like much now, but they were deep and engaging for...
