A new fork of the popular DS emulator, melonDS, called melonPrimeDS has been released. Developed by user makidoll, this emulator adds keyboard and mouse support specifically for Metroid Prime Hunters, similar to the previous PrimeHack mod. melonPrimeDS aims to make the game more accessible by enabling traditional FPS controls. The emulator also offers several customized settings for screen layout, rendering and performance optimizations. For those looking to try it out, the emulator uses a different config path than melonDS, as to avoid conflicts and requries a copy of the v1.1 USA ROM of Metroid Prime: Hunters to function. Other regions will not work due to the memory injection methods used. Source
Ubisoft has been in the eye of the storm in several occasions, be it for one reason or another, but one of the most recent events that brought forth the disdain of the fanbase towards the gaming company was the complete delisting of the game from all available platforms. Back in December 14th, 2023, Ubisoft released a post detailing that the very first game in the franchise "The Crew" would effectively have all of its servers shut down, with the deadline being March 31st, 2024. Alongside this, the game would be delisted from all online stores, including PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna and Ubisoft+, with Ubisoft offering a direct link for steps to request a refund. Ubisoft cited "upcoming server infrastructure and...
Before the Switch came around, the Wii U was the all-in-one Nintendo machine that every homebrew enthusiasts could have wished for. It could run Wii U and Wii games natively, and with the virtual Wii environment (also known as vWii) running in its hardware, which was basically full Wii hardware backwards compatibility, it allowed for everything that ran previously on the Wii to also run on the Wii U almost by default. The Wii U also offered new emulation options when it came to Virtual Console, adding DS and a new N64 emulator, both of which offered new options for Virtual Console injections, making the Wii U the best option to emulate everything from Nintendo's catalogue from the NES, all the way up to the Wii, including SNES, Game...
The multi-console emulator Provenance is still coming to the iOS App Store, despite a DMCA takedown request from Nintendo. Developer Joseph Mattiello had been contacted by Nintendo following the announcement that Provenance would include Yuzu, the Switch emulator that was recently shut down by the Japanese giant. However, according to iMore, it would seem that this issue has been resolved, and Mattiello plans to release Provenance to TestFlight users "as soon as he can". Once the app has been tested, it will then be submitted to Apple for review, and then general release – assuming no other issues come to light. The list of systems supported by Provenance is staggering. It includes consoles from Atari, Sega, SNK, NEC, Sony and...
Another day, another great emulator that makes its way into the Apple Store for more users to enjoy. With Apple opening its store up to videogame emulators earlier this year, emulators didn't take long to start appearing into the official store, with the Delta emulator being the first one to pop up, and the PS1 emulator Gamma following up just a few days ago, and with the portability of emulator being a key factor, it was only a matter of time before we could start seeing more heavy-hitters in the emulation scene appear in the Apple Store. The latest frontend for emulators to appear in it is none other than the famous RetroArch that operates with files called "cores", which are the emulators themselves, and users can switch between...
Continuing with the number of available retro emulators found in the Apple Store, after Apple's decision to finally allow videogame emulators on their store, another retro console emulator is now available for Apple users to enjoy. The latest emulator to join the ranks is an emulator for the original PlayStation console, titled "Gamma", by ZodTTD. This new emulator includes known emulator features, like Memory Card save emulation, save states, cloud save syncing, bluetooth controller support, and box cover artwork. ZodTTD is known for having a wide variety of iPhone-centric applications, which include a number of retro emulators aside from Gamma, like an N64 emulator and others, and it's also a well-known developer in the jailbreaking...
With just a couple weeks after its initial release in the App Store, the Delta emulator for iOS was received with great success, after Apple loosened up its rules in regards to video game emulators being available in their App Store at the start of the month. However, despite the success of the emulator on the platform, one of the drawbacks from the Delta release was that it wasn't supported for iPad devices (alongside relying on the AltStore in order for people located in the EU to be able to use it). Thankfully, developer Riley Testut is currently working on providing iPad support for the next upcoming release of the emulator, providing an update through his Mastodon account in regards to the current state of the iPad support: The...
2024 has been a hard year for emulator and homebrew enthusiasts, with many websites and projects being taken down, like some GitHub homebrew projects, and others have been sued, as was the case with Yuzu, which sadly took Citra down as collateral damage as well. Given the whole ordeal that occurred with the Yuzu situation, many emulator developers started to take defensive stances to avoid any kind of legal action by big corporations, with some even claiming to abandon their projects altogether. One such case was that of Pizza Boy, which got removed from the Google Play Store back in March after the resolution of Yuzu's case was made public. After almost two months from the whole ordeal, just a couple of days ago italian developer...
The time has finally come, and after many, many years (if not decades) of Apple users having to side load emulator apps into their iOS devices through unofficial stores (like AltStore), emulators are finally a reality in the official Apple Store for iOS devices. The Delta emulator, the successor to the original GBA4iOS emulator, has just been officially added today to the Apple Store for iOS, with the emulator supporting the following consoles from the get-go: Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Nintendo 64 Game Boy Game Boy Color Game Boy Advance Nintendo DS The emulator also includes a wide variety of features expected from an emulator nowadays, like cheat support, save states, fast...
With Apple having recently updated their guidelines for the App Store, iOS users have been left to speculate on specific wording and whether retro emulators as we know them would truly have a place in the great walled garden. Today it seems out questions have been answered with the arrival of what appears to be the first traditional emulator on the App Store: iGBA. Having downloaded it myself I can confirm it is a functional GBA and GBC emulator, so what's the catch? Well to be blunt, this really just looks like the classic iOS emulator GBA4iOS, with unavoidable advertisements thrown in for good measure. This comes from a developer with an extensive library of apps ranging from barcode scanners to money trackers, all oddly four...
Exophase, the developer of the DraStic Nintendo DS emulator, has made a statement regarding the future of the emulator. DraStic has been a popular closed-source DS emulator on Android that has been available for many years. However, following the fallout from both Yuzu and Citra emulator's situations, Exophase has decided to take DraStic off of the Google Play Store. According to them, DraStic was already going to be pulled from the Google Play Store, regardless of current events, but that things made the issue, "more urgent". Before the app gets delisted, Exophase has made DraStic free to download, when it had previously cost $4.99 to buy. They plan on eventually releasing the source code for the emulator as well. You can grab...
Emulator frontend Emulation-Station has been removed from the Amazon Appstore, less than a week after its launch. The reasoning for the app's removal, is, according to Amazon, Emulation-Station, "facilitates emulating and pirating of games from third-party sources without explicit authorization from those sources", despite Emulation-Station merely acting as a frontend, and not actually including any emulators in the app. The development team behind ES-DE has instead decided to go ahead with self-publishing the APK for the Android version of their frontend. In order to get the app now, you'll need to join Emulation-Station's Patreon, for $5.50 USD a month. You'll then be given access to the Android APK that you can install on your...
The Nintendo 3DS is already past its prime, both in life-cycle and its homebrew scene, and while its homebrew scene still continues to be strong to this day, many people have moved away from it and are instead focusing on the Nintendo Switch. While the 3DS did get its fair share of emulators from previous Nintendo consoles, even up to a Nintendo 64 emulator with DaedalusX64-3DS, one specific console from Nintendo's history of failures is the Virtual Boy, and given the 3DS feature of playing games in actual 3D, it was a lost opportunity for Nintendo not to capitalize on the success of the 3DS' 3D technology to revive the Virtual Boy in its full 3D glory, without the headaches of the actual red-lenses visor that the original Virtual Boy...
Emulation-Station is a frontend available on various platforms, which acts as an organized launcher for all your games. Most notably, it's used as a low-power frontend for Raspberry Pi emulation boxes, or as one of the primary ways to access retro game backups on the Steam Deck and other handheld devices. As of now, Emulation-Station is usable on more than just computers, as the developers have added Android to its list of available platforms. Emulation-Station DE has been released onto the Amazon Appstore, with plans for a Google Play release eventually, though according to the developers, Google has not allowed the app onto the store thus far. The app costs $5.39 USD, and once purchased, allows you to organize, theme, and display...
