We haven't seen a homebrew game for the NUON system for ten years, but now the wait is over – the failed DVD / games console hybrid is getting another bedroom-coded release (thanks, V-SNES). Noel Rojas Oliveras' PS1 Net Yaroze title Insta Death has been ported to NUON with the help of ScarPixel / DragonShadow Industries 'Yaroze Wrapper' tool, which was created in the mid-2000s. Homebrew coder gwald has used the tool to port Insta Death, fixing bugs along the way and adding in analog control, high scores, an attract mode and a button combo to exit the game. You can download it free of charge here.
Update [Mon 16th Sep, 2024 15:00 BST]: The crowdfunding campaign for The Cursed Legacy is now live on Kickstarter. If you want to back the project, there are a bunch of available rewards currently being offered as part of the campaign, such as a digital copy (Steam & Mega Drive / Genesis) of the game (for €10), a complete-in-box version for Sega Mega Drive / Genesis (priced at €45 to €50), and a special edition that comes with a modded, painted and serviced MegaDrive 1 console as well as The Cursed Knight and other additional extras (costing €700). Here's a description of the project taken from the campaign page: And here's the link for those who want to lend their support. Rewards are currently expected to ship in March 2025...
The recent Sonic Amateur Games Expo (SAGE) has given us some cool fan-made Sonic titles, but one in particular has caught our attention. Sonic UltraSaturn by Un Sonic Ryu is a great-looking PC-based 2D Sonic tribute with some cool scaling effects for its 3D stages. Zones include the likes of Madness Mountain, Dynamite Plant, Crystal Frost, Rainy Savannah and Sky Chase, while the special stages take place in virtual isometric environments (like Sonic 3D Blast) rendered by Robotnik's XRI system. Un Sonic Ryu has even produced some fake commercials to support the game: You can download the game here.
Nape Games, a small Spanish studio, has just launched the Kickstarter campaign for Restless Anima: Engine Room — a brand-new psychological horror game coming to the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Dreamcast (as spotted by SegaGuru!) The game features a setting that is loosely inspired by the experiences of the designer, programmer, and producer Napoleón Malpica, who worked as a Merchant Marine Officer for 13 years. On Kickstarter, Malpica describes the project as a game that "recreates the true terror of working at sea on a merchant ship with a video game touch", which, in this case, translates to an 8-bit action-platformer that sees players navigating a ship, solving puzzles, and battling with mysterious entities named Animas...
Pigsy, the developer behind the Genesis / Mega Drive port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, has teased another Castlevania-related project – but before you get too excited, it won't be a full remake of the game. Instead, Pigsy has shared a mocked-up screen of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse on Sega's 16-bit console before pointing out that the most we'll see is a demo, rather than a complete port. "I'm not planning to do a full remake of the game," Pigsy says. "Earlier this year, I did a lot of work upgrading the GG Shinobi graphics from Game Gear to Mega Drive and before I go back to touch them up I wanted to get more "8-bit to 16-bit graphical upgrading" practice. A 8 to 16-bit "remake" has different challenges from 32-16 bit...
Poke Transporter GB is a homebrew app for the GBA that serves to bridge the gap between the old and new games, providing a way to pull Pokemon from the Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles into the third generation. This is done using a custom Multiboot GBA ROM that genuinely could be mistaken for official software for just how professional and polished the final version actually is. With the ROM loaded on one system, you insert the GBA game you want the Pokemon to travel to. On another system, you put the Pokemon you want to transport into your current box, and talk to the Cable Club attendant to initialize a trade. It's here where the magic really happens, with work behind the scenes happening to remove the Pokemon entirely from their...
While there are many unkind souls out there who will tell you that the Sega CD isn't worth a look, this oft-maligned add-on for the Genesis / Mega Drive played host to the excellent Sonic CD – arguably the closest thing to a killer app it could muster. The game has now been ported to the Genesis as part of the 2024 Sonic Hacking Contest‬ and will be released fully on September 28th. MDTravis is acting as the main programmer and custom artist, with ‪@KatKuriN‬ in charge of original disassembly and support. Devon was responsible for the initial port code reference and un-hardcoded chunks guide, as well as providing general support, while ‪@vladikcomper‬ supplied the DAC driver (MegaPCM v2.0) and MegaPCM2 debugging. ‪@sleekflash16‬...
The Saturn benefitted from a 4MEG RAM cartridge which allowed developers to store more information and create arcade-perfect ports of games like X-Men vs. Street Fighter and King of Fighters '96, and ended up being one of the more unique aspects of the console's accessory library. A decade ago, homebrew developer Tiido started work on a similar (unofficial) project for the Sega / Mega CD, and it has recently been resurrected by a new team of devs (thanks, Retro RGB). MiGeRA recently reverse-engineered Tiido's original prototype board, and this appears to have triggered a wave of interest in reviving the project. It seems that the main focus of the cart will be to expand the possibilities of Sega CD and 32X games. The current board...
Update [Fri 23rd Aug, 2024 10:30 BST]: Pigsy has released a new video showing off some of the recent developments related to his Symphony of the Night Genesis port. Update [Mon 25th Dec, 2023 14:25 GMT]: Pigsy has released a playable demo - Merry Christmas! You can download it here. Original Story [Tue 3rd Jan, 2023 12:30 GMT]: Some time ago, our friends over at Nintendo Life reported on the existence of a Sega Mega Drive / Genesis port of Konami's legendary Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Developed by 'Pigsy', this project is now pretty advanced, as you can see from the video below (thanks, Indie Retro News). Alucard's animation looks perfect, and the backgrounds are also a very, very close match to the PlayStation...
Update [Tue 20th Aug, 2024 11:35 BST]: Mauro Xavier has offered an updated look at his latest Mega Drive / Genesis project, Driftin' Rage in an exciting new video uploaded to his YouTube channel. The video shows an extended look at the stylish vehicle selection screen, as well as some direct gameplay featuring one of the selectable motorbikes, the Brazuka, facing off against 7 other competitors on one of the game's courses. On the subject of courses, recently Xavier shared a tweet that seems to list the 12 locations that will be included in the finished game, writing that "the time has come to program the tracks with the right weather, behavior, and consistent graphics". According to the list, these tracks will include the following...
The New 8-Bit Heroes's director Joe Granato revealed that the popular NES development software NESmaker will soon be changing its name to Retro Game Forge and will also be adding support for SNES development. NESMaker, in case you're unaware, is a software development tool that currently costs $36 to download and provides a suite of tools and editors for creating original NES games. It's been used to develop a large number of homebrew NES games in the past — many of which are available to play online via the virtual arcade The Retro Verse. In a recent direct, however, Granato announced that the software will soon become more platform agnostic, being capable of assisting with the development of games for other consoles such as the...
If you've been reading GameParadise for a while, you may have realized by now that we're pretty fascinated by Nintendo's Japan-exclusive Satellaview service, which famously saw the popular video game company partner with the broadcaster St. GIGA to transmit games directly to people's living rooms via satellite in the mid-to-late 90s. But what you might now know (as we've only just heard about it ourselves) is that a determined group of individuals are resurrecting the service, under the name Satellaview+, and that they are now looking for homebrew SNES games to join their upcoming lists of broadcasts. According to @HowlingFoxRouko, a member of the team, the broadcasts are done "via a local client that is made by the team's organizer."...
Seen by many fans as the black sheep of The Legend of Zelda franchise, Zelda II sticks out as one of the most unique titles in the series, switching the top-view that made the original The Legend of Zelda for NES such a classic in favour of a side-scrolling adventure, one that the series wouldn't see officially (and partially) again until Link's Awakening on the Game Boy (and excluding the CDi titles of course), with LA only using a side-scrolling view for very limited areas in dungeons. Even though the game does have its haters, known romhacker infidelity has taken upon the task of porting the entirety of Zelda II into the SNES, which he did a couple of weeks ago back in June 28th, 2024. The port itself features some slight quality of...
Today, the EverSD team has announced that, thanks to a new update, the EverSD homebrew cartridge is now compatible with HyperMegaTech's Super Pocket retro handheld. It enables owners to run homebrew games and develop software on the system like it does on the Evercade. A trailer was aired for the occasion: Changelog of the new update can be found below: Furthermore, the team announced that they are taking pre-orders for EverSD of new colours. The two new options match the Super Pocket handheld (as depicted in the image above). SOURCE
We're a bit late to the party here, but did you know that developer phoboslab created a tribute to Quake that is 13 kb in size? Q1K3 was developed for the 2021 edition of js13kGames, a JavaScript coding competition which has been running since 2012. The file size limit for all submissions is 13 kilobytes. As noted by @stasisgame, that's smaller in size than the image included in this tweet: While it can't be called an exact reproduction of the original, it manages to get the feel of Quake nailed down pretty well. There are two levels, five enemy types and three weapons – as well as music from Andy Lösch, dynamic lighting and decent AI. You can give it a spin here. This year's js13kGames competition will commence on 13th August and...
Back in 1981, Nintendo released the Game & Watch handheld Chef – and like so many of its LCD-based devices, it was a huge hit. Fast forward to 1997, and the company updated the concept with Modern Chef, a game that featured on the Game Boy Color collection Game & Watch Gallery 2. In it, characters from the Mario universe take centre stage, making it more visually appealing than the original. Leap forward again to 2024, and indie developer Bunnynaut has created an unofficial remake of the game in the game called Modern Modern Chef. "Faithfully recreated with completely hand-drawn artwork, playable with both the original gameplay style and a challenging new reaction-based game mode," says the game's official page. "Also included are...
Hasbro's Transformers line of toys, comics, movies and cartoons has been thrilling fans for 40 years now, so it's amazing to us that in all that time, we've not had a decent one-on-one fighting game based on the cross-media franchise. Pixel artist and animator The Diepod – who has worked on the likes of Kong: Skull Island, Master of the Universe and Tomb Raider for Powerhouse Animation Studios – is seeking to right this wrong with their own (unofficial) game. "Just a fan project I'm working on for myself," says the artist. "No big deal." The Diepod explains that the game – which is built using the Ikemen Go game engine – will feature assists like Marvel vs. Capcom. "I'll make the assists selectable when all of them are made. There...

The creator behind the popular Shenmue Dreams of Saturn fangame, George Kitchen, has just dropped a trailer for his latest project, titled "Shenmue: Reclaiming the Path". This fan made game follows the events of Shenmue 2 and lets players explore the previously unreachable region of Guilin as a new protagonist. Explore the new villages of Bailu and Shouzu as you prepare to confront the notorious Chiyou men, the same crew responsible for Ryo Hazuki's father's demise in the original games. Shenmue: Reclaiming The Path will be available on PC on September 16th and will feature fully implemented subtitles and controller support. Source
Homebrew games for retro consoles have seen a rise over the years thanks to new tools and community-made development kits, which help a lot in the process of creating brand-new games for older consoles. This past month, romhacker and developer kandowontu, also known for his Starfox EX romhack for the original Starfox and several FastROM hacks for over 60 titles for the SNES, alongside a team of artists and other coders, have been working lately on a new homebrew game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) titled "Famidash", a demake of the popular rhythm-action platformer indie game Geometry Dash developed originally by Robert Topala on 2013 (also be found on Steam). Famidash is currently being developed in what seems to be a...
