Super Monkey Ball is cute. Hatsune Miku is cute. Sega has its hand in both. It just makes sense to bring the real pop princess to Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble, the latest game in the long-running series. Paid DLC for guest characters Hatsune Miku and Godzilla will launch next week. The game will also be upgraded to version 2.00 (for free); this update includes a new patch that adds lots of new content.
Two new guest characters will be available as DLC, and they couldn't be more different. First up, cheery virtual singer Hatsune Miku. The second one? Godzilla, the mighty King of Monsters. When playing as Miku, groove through stages collecting musical notes instead of bananas. Or cause destruction as Godzilla, with banana pick-ups...
Capcom Artworks' social media accounts have just shared a bunch of rarely-seen sketches for a collection of Capcom titles, including Street Fighter Alpha, Darkstalkers, Star Gladiator, and Cyberbots (thanks Eventhubs for the spot!).
As you may or not already be aware, over the last few years, Capcom has been holding a travelling art exhibition across various locations in Japan, under the name "Tezuka Fighting Universe: CAPCOM VS. Osamu Tezuka CHARACTERS", with the event currently taking place at the Tokiwaso Manga Museum in Toshima City, Tokyo until November 24th.
The exhibition allows visitors to check out a bunch of cool, new crossover art, created by Tezuka Productions' and Capcom's artists, but is also home to some incredible...
Bitmap Books founder Sam Dyer has been speaking to GI.biz about his line of excellent video game-related books and has opened up on the topics of nostalgia, growth and preservation.
Bitmap has produced a series of coffee table classics over the years and has worked with the likes of Sega, SNK and Atari – but Dyer admits that it would be a "dream" to collaborate with Nintendo on a book in the future.
"Who knows, maybe one day we could work with Nintendo," he says. "That would be a dream come true to produce books on their IP."
Such a move is all part of Dyer's strategy for his company, which has been in business for a decade now. "What I want to do in the future is become a lot more known for this," he explains. "Say, for example, a...
Famed speedrunner Suigi has claimed all five major records associated with Super Mario 64, effectively enshrining himself as one of the greatest speedrunners of all time (thanks, GamesRadar).
There are five categories when it comes to completing Mario's 64-bit debut really fast: 120 star, 70 star, 16 star, 1 star, and 0 star. Suigi has spent years perfecting his skills in the game, and on November 17th, he secured the world record in all five – something that many people assumed was simply impossible.
According to Summoning Salt, an account which follows speedrunning world records, Suigi's stranglehold on those five categories might hold for some time yet. "Not only does Suigi hold all 5, but he holds most by a huge margin. Nobody...
Fans have just released two new improvement patches for the ill-received Sega Mega Drive title Fantasia from the developer Infogrames and its publisher Sega.
If you were a fan of Disney and video games in the early '90s, you'll know that we were pretty much spoilt for choice when it came to great 2D platformers starring Mickey Mouse. There was Sega's superb Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, and Land of Illusion, Capcom's incredible Magical Quest series, and of course, Traveller's Tales' Mickey Mania. But that's not to say there weren't some disappointments thrown in there too, with one good example of this being 1991's Fantasia, based on Disney's 1940 musical film of the same name.
Fantasia was notably slammed by critics...
Edia, the Japanese company behind recent re-releases of Valis and Tenshi No Uta has teased another new retro project, this time based on Wolf Team's "Anett and Earnest" trilogy.
This series includes the Genesis game El Viento (1991) and the Sega CD titles Earnest Evans (1991) and Anett Futatabi (1993).
Nothing beyond a piece of artwork has been shown so far, showing the three games mentioned above.
El Viento and Earnest Evans are both action platformers, while Anett Futatabi is a side-scrolling fighter.
El Viento received a North American release via Renovation Products, and Earnest Evans was also released in the region by the same company – although it was ported to the Genesis rather than the Sega CD, which meant the removal of...
Fans have released a new English translation patch for the Japan-exclusive PS2 game Detective Conan: Legacy of the British Empire (otherwise known as Meitantei Conan: Daiei Teikoku no Isan).
The game is based on the long-running manga series Detective Conan (created by Gosho Aoyama) about a high school detective called Shinichi Kudo, whose body is shrunk down to that of an elementary kid after being forced to drink an experimental poison. From there, the series then follows the detective as he solves various crimes, under the assumed identity Conan Edogawa, while seeking to track down the organization responsible for his current condition and return himself to normal.
The manga debuted in 1994 and was adapted two years later into an...
When it comes to the Atelier series, combat and synthesis are core gameplay elements. Upcoming Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land (first announced during August 2024's Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase) is no different, but both elements have been revamped to give the JRPG a new, fresh feel. Today, Gust and Koei Tecmo shared updated gameplay details alongside a new trailer.
In the game, alchemy became taboo following the cataclysm that destroyed the continent of Aladiss. Yumia Liessfeldt's journey begins when she and her friends decide to unravel the mysteries behind the cataclysm. Mysterious characters obsessed with alchemy will try to stop Yumia from discovering the truth, including Noble in a Black Cloak...
We're all well aware that today's Atari is a very different beast from the one that blazed such a trail in the '70s and '80s with its arcade and console hardware.
The Atari name has changed hands multiple times since the company's halcyon days, and, to be fair, the modern-day iteration is doing a pretty good job of leveraging the incredible legacy of the firm after some rocky years.
However, the past decade hasn't been entirely plain sailing for Atari. Its much-hyped VCS revival ended up being commercially disappointing, and its ventures into non-video game worlds (like hotels) haven't exactly gone according to plan.
There's another non-product which really sticks in the minds of some Atari fans, however: the Gameband. Launched on...
With the likes of the NES and SNES Classic Editions, Nintendo kicked off a craze for micro-consoles that continues to this very day, with rivals such as Sega, SNK and Taito all getting in on the act and producing similar products.
Annoyingly, Nintendo itself hasn't created another 'mini' console for some time, but you know you can rely on the community when it comes to scratching that itch.
The insanely talented robertdunnart has created a GameCube Mini, which is a fraction of the size of the real thing – an impressive feat when you consider how dinky Nintendo's boxy beauty already is.
The device is powered by an x86 Intel-based mini PC and runs games via emulation, and, as you might expect, there's no room for a disc drive...
We've had our eyes on 8BitMod's upcoming VMU Pro for some time now – and who can blame us? This updated version of the Dreamcast's memory card will offer more storage, a colour screen and the ability to play music.
Oh, and it can play Doom, too.
Whether or not a piece of electronics can run id Software's iconic FPS has long been a true test of power and adaptability, and the VMU Pro passes with flying colours, as you can see from the footage below.
The VMU Pro joins similar products from 8BitMods aimed at the PS1, PS2 and GameCube. There's no solid release date as yet.
It's not the only option on the market if you're looking for a next-gen VMU replacement – there's also the superb VM2...
In a new two-hour documentary from Valve, current and former members of the company talk openly about the creation of Half-Life 2 as well as finally spilling the beans on what happened to Episode 3, and even showing gameplay of early prototypes of the canceled game.
On November 15, Valve released a large update for Half-Life 2 to celebrate the game's 20-year anniversary. The update includes new commentary, quality-of-life features, Steam Workshop support, and more. However, perhaps the most exciting thing to come out of this big Half-Life 2 celebration is a new two-hour documentary from Valve detailing the development of the famous first-person shooter and its follow-up episodes. And yes, they talk about Half-Life 2 Episode 3, the game...
Nintendo tracked down an alleged Switch pirate using a combination of Reddit posts and repair orders, a new lawsuit has revealed.
As reported by Game File, Nintendo sued James "Archbox" Williams, from Surprise, Arizona, for allegedly violating its digital copyrights by selling pirated copies of Switch games.
According to the lawsuit, Nintendo hired a law firm called Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp to investigate online pirate video game stores and found a user called Archbox it traced to Arizona. It then spotted a Reddit user called Archbox (Archbox was a moderator of r/SwitchPirates). Based on their posts, the law firm was able to identify Archbox as James Williams. Williams, it turns out, had various Nintendo accounts associated with...
For many people, Street Fighter II represents a certain degree of perfection and balance.
Sure, Capcom has iterated upon the concept repeatedly since the early 1990s, but there's something beautifully pure about the earlier versions of the game, with their focused rosters and smaller move lists.
Still, it's fun to imagine how games like Street Fighter can be updated and expanded in unusual ways, and that's precisely what modder Billy Time Games is doing.
Following on from his Streets of Rage 2 hack – which allowed characters to level up, RPG-style – he's working on a patch for Super Street Fighter II on the Genesis that boasts experience points.
"Currently working on an XP System for SSF2," says the modder. "Each 100,000 points...
Following the success of the Nottingham Video Game Expo earlier this year, the team behind the event is expanding and launching a new show in the British city of Bristol.
The show will feature vendors, new games, food, drink and a host of guest speakers – the first to be confirmed is Worms creator Andy Davidson. Davidson is currently hard at work updating the legendary Director's Cut of the game for the Amiga.
There will also be an eight-player Quake III LAN tournament and a Mario Kart 8 tournament, while the show's indie game arena will be operated in conjunction with Debug Magazine.
"After the success of Nottingham Video Games Expo over the last few years, we felt it was time to venture across to other areas where gaming events and...
The Sega Channel was way ahead of its time. The service allowed Genesis / Mega Drive owners to download games to their consoles using a dial-up connection and was a forerunner to the digital distribution systems we all take for granted today.
Two unreleased Sega Channel titles have just been discovered and preserved, thanks to the efforts of Sonic Retro Forums member ndiddy. Taking an image file uploaded by another community member, RisingFromRuins, ndiddy has been able to extract Klondike Solitare and The Chessmaster.
"I was able to reverse engineer the tool that encodes the image file (NSF.EXE) and wrote my own that reverses this process," explains ndiddy. "There's a couple unreleased games in there (Chessmaster and Klondike) and a...
While Epic Games is best known for the free-to-play juggernaut that is Fortnite, it found initial fame with 1998's graphically stunning Unreal, which was followed by online shooter Unreal Tournament a year later.
Both games are no longer available for download digitally, but Epic has given its blessing for The Internet Archive to host installation files which allow anyone to download and play them.
As reported by Game Developer, a post was made on the Old Unreal Discord server which outlines Epic's view on the situation:
The disc image files are here and here, but you can use Old Unreal's Windows-based installers for both if you fancy an easier ride (those can be found here and here).
The Unreal series effectively ended in 2007...
Unless you're lucky enough to have been a child back in 2003 and not a jaded adult like us, you'd be forgiven for not even realising that Disney's Piglet's Big Movie got its own video game on home consoles.
Tie-ins like this are almost always forgettable, but Piglet's Big Game is enjoying a second lease of life thanks to the fact that it's being compared to horror classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill (thanks, Destructoid).
The game's soundtrack – composed by Doki Denki Studio's Philippe Codecco and Guillaume Saurel – is surprisingly dark and spooky, and this has led to the game going viral on social media.
Check out this music – does it sound like it was composed for a game aimed at kids?
Amazingly, one Twitter user even...
Since it was announced in October of 2022, I've taken every opportunity to write about Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island for over two years — and here's the best yet! The exploration friendship adventure game about friendship is set to launch on Nintendo Switch and Xbox in addition to PC, and an early December release date is set. In Canada right now, the temperatures are lowering and daylight hours shortening (hello, SAD!); a blast of warm, tropical sunshine could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is a non-linear adventure inspired by A Short Hike and the Ace Attorney games. Become a backpacker named Alex, stranded on a mysterious island's shores. As she starts to explore Ambrosia Island, she quickly learns...
For better or worse, so much can change in 10 years. In particular, things continue to escalate and become far more bleak when it comes to war. Some of the biggest video game franchises continue to glorify war by literally gamifying it, making violence and death look like a great time rather than what it is: horrifying. Ten years ago, This War of Mine portrayed war from the civilians' perspective. The game is dark, dripping in despair. Your morals are constantly questioned, eroding with time as desperation sets in. Strangers become family as people struggle in ruined homes to find food and water, fix the house, stay warm, and stay together. (Children came in future DLC.) When you fight, it is to survive rather than up your body count...
