ScarlettVixen has just released Mario Adventure 3, an ambitious Super Mario Bros. 3 ROM hack which is 20 years in the making. "It's been an extremely long project, but after 12 years, it's finally here," says the developer. "Many of this game's elements are iterations and polishes on concepts found in prior projects. Mario Adventure 3 is more than a 12 year project, it's a 20 year amalgamation of ideas waiting to see fruition." Mario Adventure launched in 2002 and, since then, has been iterated upon with other hacks, including Luigi's Coin Quest and Luigi vs. Mario. Mario Adventure 3 takes many of the concepts found in these previous games and augments and enhances them. Some of the new features included in the game are: Day and...
Double Dragon artist Koji Ogata has revealed that he and other members of the team who worked on the original 1987 game don't consider the upcoming Double Dragon Revive to be a true entry in the long-running series (thanks, VGC). Ogata worked on the first Double Dragon, and would also contribute to many of its sequels. He's not involved with Revive, which is being developed by Yuke's (most famous for its wrestling games) and published by Arc System Works, which now owns the rights to the series, having purchased them from creator Technos in 2015. Double Dragon Revive is expected to arrive on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC next year. "I'll be honest with you," Ogata wrote on Twitter. "The fact is that not a single person in...
Today's annual Level-5 Vision event is subtitled "To the World's Children." The idea is that games aren't just for children, they're also for adults who never lost their inner child. Recently, the publisher has been delaying many of its games, some repeatedly. I normally understand delays but with this many, I'm getting both frustrated and concerned. Unfortunately, this event does not lessen any of my fears. It does, however, provide information on a handful of previously-announced titles and two new game announcements; there are new trailers for each game. (Note: There is one game I didn't include because it's a game update and not an upcoming title, but if you're interested — Megaton Muashi W: Wired will receive a major update in...
The little brother to Nintendo's flagship hardware, the Switch Lite released in 2019 to positive reviews. With all the power of the full-sized console at a lower cost, along with integrated controls and a traditional D-Pad, the system positioned itself as a perfect fit for those wanting to travel light. This portability came at a price though, with the system unable to dock for a full console experience. Nintendo went onto release the OLED Switch two years later, leaving some fans of the smaller form factor hoping their system of choice might be graced with such an upgrade. No such revision came, but fans of the Lite may yet be in luck. Teased earlier this year by YouTuber Taki Udon, SUPER5 is an OLED display kit for the Switch Lite...

Keep an eye on what announcements SEGA has in store for the Sonic franchise, by tuning in to the recently revealed Sonic Central event, set for tomorrow morning. Taking place at 9am PST, the livestream will feature upcoming Sonic-related projects, partnerships, and events that will happen in 2025. Source
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is a game that's only become more beloved over time. Being remastered for the Wii U in 2013, fans have eagerly awaited the game's release on the more accessible Switch. 11 years later those same fans are still waiting, some still holding off replaying this classic tale in hopes of keeping the experience fresh if and when Nintendo finally pull the trigger. If you happen to find yourself in that niche lion-headed boat, it's time to set down your Wind Waker and turn your attention to something I frankly can't believe exists. "The Legend of Goose: The Honk Waker" is a colossal ROM hack more than four years in the making. Starting out as a simple mod to swap out Link's model for the GameCube game's...
The market for emulation handhelds has been flooded over the past few years with countless devices all doing pretty much the same thing, so it's refreshing to see a manufacturer try something a bit different. Granted, PowKiddy's upcoming RGB20 Pro is yet another Game Boy-style portable, but we're quite taken by the fact that it will sport a transparent front panel which gives a small glimpse of its innards. According to Retro Handhelds, the RGB20 Pro has the following specs: Display: 3.2-inch IPS Resolution: 1024 x 768 Processor: RK3566 RAM: 1GB LPDDR4 Storage: Dual-microSD Card Slots (16GB – 256GB) Wi-Fi Bluetooth 3.5mm Headphone Jack Battery: 5,000mAh Dimensions: 150.2 x 83.3 x 23.3mm Colors: Yellow, Sky Blue, Green, Grey...
Bandai's Tamagotchi virtual pet is seeing another rise in popularity, with its first UK store opening up in London's fashionable Camden market. The brand became one of the hottest-selling items of the '90s and was relaunched in 2019. The BBC reports that global sales more than doubled between 2022 and 2023. While your typical Tamagotchi retains the same basic design, the device has come a long way since it launched in 1996. "Now you can connect with friends, you can play on Wi-Fi and download different items, and that's really combating that sense of fatigue that you might have gotten with some earlier models," Tamagotchi brand manager Priya Jadeja told the BBC. "When we relaunched, we thought it would be a very millennial-focused...
GOG.com has announced that the original version of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis will launch on the PC-based platform on September 25th. The game launched on PS1 on September 22, 1999, and would be ported to PC the following year. It was remade for modern systems in 2020. Just like Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the team at GOG has "made the best version possible." This version will include: Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11 6 localizations of the game included (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese) Mercenaries Mode included Improved DirectX game renderer New rendering options (Windowed Mode, Vertical Synchronization Control, Gamma Correction, Integer Scaling and more) Improved graphics engine...
A new hack has just been released online that introduces the Star Fox 2 characters Miyu and Fay to the original Star Fox. Miyu and Fay, in case you are unaware, are the two brand new recruits that joined the Star Fox team in the cancelled follow-up to Star Fox (which was eventually released via the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017). They resemble a lynx and a poodle respectively, and have since become popular characters among members of the fanbase despite having only ever appeared in a single game. The new hack, therefore, seeks to give players more time with the Star Fox recruits, incorporating them into the original game with fresh dialogue being added and existing cutscenes being edited to make this as natural as possible...
Sega is offering a salary of $100,000 and $130,000 a year for an "Archivist" role within the company, focusing mainly on documenting Sonic's history. "SEGA. . . What do you think of when you hear that word?" states the job listing. "Do you think of the console with the iconic, harmonized voice fire ups or do you think of the countless gaming hits from Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, or the Persona series?" Based in Burbank, California, the role will report directly to the Senior Director of Lore and Creative Strategy within the Transmedia West Team. The successful applicant will be "critical to the preservation of Sonic lore, canon, characters, and universes, helping to bring consistency, connectivity, and creativity to all things...
Over the weekend, Team17 have officially given the thumbs up to Project X: Light Years — a new follow-up to its 1992 horizontal shooter for Amiga that is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. When the campaign's organizer, the "big Amiga fan" Retronix originally launched the project, it stated in the FAQ that it believed the project could go ahead without Team17 due to the name presumably no longer being trademarked due to the countless games called Project X on Steam and because of a belief that Team17 was unable to claim copyright on the project because of its use of generic traits associated with the shoot 'em up genre. Nevertheless, it claimed that it had been trying to reach out to the studio, to get explicit approval anyway and...
If you're a fan of Wizardry, you may be familiar with the 7th game in the series Crusaders of the Dark Savant, which was originally released back in 1992 for DOS computers. The game followed on from the events of Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge and saw the players' party travelling to the planet Guardia, to track down the resting place of a powerful artifact known as the Astral Dominae, becoming embroiled in a plot along the way featuring various factions — each with their own different agendas. The game was presented from a first-person perspective with 2D pixel art, similar to many previous entries in the series, but something that you might not know about the game is that it actually received an updated 3D remake for the...
When a yakuza legend loses his memory, what does he do? He becomes a pirate, of course! It may not be such a realistic path, but it makes sense when you think of how much the two careers have in common. Goro Majima is a notorious ex-yakuza who finds himself shipwrecked on a sparsely-populated Pacific island six months after teaming up with Kiryu for a massive battle in the Millennium Tower. He has the bits of a boat with him, but absolutely no memory of who he is or what he's done. Helped by the young islander who saved him, Majima begins a search for clues to his past — not expecting the powder-keg world that awaits. Majima and the boy, Noah, end up involved in a conflict between cutthroat criminals, modern-day pirates, and other...
PS5 scene developer Specter has released their PS5 jailbreak that currently targets 2.x version firmwares and lower. The jailbreak dubbed UMTX is based on a webkit kernel exploit and allows users to unlock specific features of their PlayStation 5 console. There are plans to port the jailbreak to higher firmware versions up to 6.x but due to the additional security measures this could take a considerable amount of time. Unfortuantely for those consoles on 6.x and 7.x firmware versions this webkit exploit has been patched but potential blu-ray related exploits are being considered. The UMTX jailbreak allows users to unlock the PS5 debug menu and even provides users an entry point to inject small (limited) payloads such as a basic Hello...
AI is the flavor of the month in the tech world, with practically everybody in the consumer electronics industry trying to shoehorn the buzzword into their product or service. We're also seeing AI infiltrate the world of game development, with companies like EA stating that it's a big part of their strategy. Generative AI video software has also become incredibly popular, and we're now seeing it used as a means of "updating" classic video games. Check out this example of Shenmue, run through "Gen-3 vid2vid": Some people would have you believe this is the future of video games: "If we manage to use the technology live in games without performance loss, that would be a huge step forward," argues @kimmonismus. "RayTracing could be...
Sony recently caused a stir by announcing a range of PS1-style designs for its console range to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand. The series includes the PS5, PS Portal and the new PS5 Pro, all clad in the iconic grey color scheme and sporting the classic multicolour PS logo. MiSTer Pi creator Taki Udon has taken this opportunity to tease a PS-related project of his own – an FPGA-based system which takes design inspiration from the original 32-bit PlayStation and runs games as accurately as possible. FPGA chips – which stands for "Field-Programmable Gate Array" – allow developers to replicate the performance of classic systems on a hardware level rather than using software, as is the case with traditional...
Streaming platform Antstream Arcade recently launched on PS4 and PS5, bringing with it over 1300 vintage games to play via a subscription. There are already a selection of PS1 titles available on the service, but studio head Mike Rouse (who also runs the Retro Gamer Boy YouTube channel) has revealed that many more are on the way. Speaking to GameRant, Rouse said: According to GameRant, Rouse says Antstream is also looking at adding more recent systems to its service, with PS2 and GameCube being referenced specifically. In case you weren't aware, Antstream uses cloud technology to stream games to a wide range of devices, including consoles, phones and computers.
Flynn's Arcade, the console publisher behind titles like Donut Dodo and Murtop has announced it will be releasing Pixel Games' Cash Cow DX on the Nintendo Switch eShop on September 26th. The game will cost £5.99 / $5.99 / €5.99 and will feature a 20% discount for the first couple of weeks. So, if you've been waiting for this to land on the Nintendo Switch, following its initial release on Steam earlier this year, now may be the time to finally give it a try. As for what Pixel Games' has planned next in terms of new projects, we already know that it is currently in the process of developing the third game in its "Class of 1983 arcade trilogy" Looney Landers for Steam, which borrows inspiration from classic titles like Sky Skipper, Sky...
