This coming Monday, April 8, is set to be a particularly sad day for Nintendo fans, as that's the day that the online services for the company's Wii U and 3DS systems will shut down forever. Online service shutdowns are a sad reality of modern gaming, effectively blocking players from enjoying the online components of various games and, in some cases, erasing entire games from existence. This isn't the first time that Nintendo has shut down the online services for its consoles, so many fans have been anticipating the same fate for the Wii U and 3DS.
The Nintendo Wii featured a variety of online services for gamers, including online multiplayer and a shop that let players download exclusive WiiWare games along with retro titles via the...
Virtual reality is bringing our wildest imaginations to life. Remember how, as kids, we used to create vast kingdoms in our minds and pretend we were rulers? Now, virtual reality technology makes those dreams almost tangible. Virtual reality (VR) is changing gaming in a big way. It lets players feel like they're inside the game world. Remember games like GTA: Vice City and Counter-Strike? Now, VR is taking gaming to the next level.
What Is Virtual Reality Gaming?
VR or virtual reality gaming is an app. It is based on a story. It streams a multi-dimensional fake world to video games. These apps are made with virtual reality software. They are given to the user to experience the VR environment. Moreover, VR games are compatible with...
Like many modern RPGs, Dragon's Dogma 2 features a wide range of special items that improve various stats. While many of these items take the form of armor or weapons, one of the most powerful examples of this mechanic is the game's vast collection of rings. In Dragon's Dogma 2, players can have two rings equipped at any given time. There are a huge number of possible upgrades and stats boosts offered by these powerful items. From increasing max carry weight, to speeding up affinity gains between characters, the game truly offers something for every playstyle. This guide will reveal a complete list of...
Nightdive Studio's System Shock remake confirmed a number of features that will be added in the next massive update, which will be released later this April. These new features for the System Shock remake include a female hacker, optional waypoints, and more.
The 2023 System Shock remake faithfully recreates the original 1994 first-person shooter, while adding a number of quality-of-life improvements and upgrading the visuals without compromising the original game's design. The remake had a rather troubled development, beginning in 2015 with a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $1 million to fund the project. However, it took eight years to develop after restarting development and being delayed several times due to engine switches...
Nintendo has always been known for its family-friendly games, with every one of the Japanese video gaming company's consoles featuring a far greater number of E-rated titles than its competitor's offerings. But with the release of the Switch, Nintendo has proven that it too can offer a fair balance of kid-friendly and adult titles, with the current console offering a great variety of horror games.
There are tons of great survival horror games for the Switch, with far more available here than any of Nintendo's previous consoles. Here are some great survival horror games that are available for the Switch.
Updated September 21, 2023, by Megan Smith: Horror games have been a prominent part of gaming for many years with players enjoying...

Following the announcement of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance in February, Atlus has now released the second official trailer for the game.
In case you missed it, this will be the "definitive version" of Shin Megami Tensei V - featuring a brand new storyline, new locations, new demons to add to your team and new choices to make. Here's some additional PR:
The game's release date was also shifted last month from 21st June to 14th June 2024 (one week earlier). Anyone who has already pre-ordered a copy online doesn't have to worry, as the updated release date will be automatically adjusted.
Thirty years ago today, Square unleashed Final Fantasy 6 upon the world, revolutionizing both the franchise and the role-playing game genre. Not only would Final Fantasy 6 end up being the last game in the series to utilize 2D sprite-based graphics, but it would also be the first game in the series to feature direction from someone other than Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. As a result, Final Fantasy 6 represents a monumental turning point for the franchise, signaling the passing of the torch from the first generation of creators to the new luminaries behind the Final Fantasy games. Essentially, Final Fantasy 6 is the end of an era.
But the title also represents the pinnacle of the series' first 7 years of existence...
In my Once Human demo, things got really weird when I wanted to ride the bus. And that's because the bus had legs. In a post-apocalyptic open world where an outbreak of cosmic energy called Stardust has sent everything a little wacky, even the public transport is bonkers.
Once Human is currently Steam's 11th most-wishlisted game – a multiplayer open-world survival game in which players can battle creatures or each other, build and defend shared territories, indulge in OTT combat or just chill with friends at their base. Ahead of its final closed beta test (which starts April 3) and planned Q3 launch, the development team at Starry Studio gave me a private glimpse at what's to come.
But first, back to the bus. Once Human's monsters are...
When reminiscing on Final Fantasy VI, what first comes to mind?
It's possible your answer is Kefka's iconic maniacal laugh, or a final boss battle that makes you dance madly, or searching for friends in a world of ruin. But somewhere in that mix—and for many, probably foremost—is the majestic-yet-silly Opera House scene.
On the surface, it's strange that the Opera House is, for many fans, the most revered part of the notably melancholic Final Fantasy VI. The musical performance is pretty set dressing on a plot device to get our party an airship while driving home Celes and Locke's relationship on the side; there's no plot relevance to the big to-do of performing an opera.
Further, the main point of tension revolves around the...
After a blockbuster Q1 period of highly anticipated new releases, April feels like a good time to catch your breath when you look at what's out this month. That's not to say that it's going to be an entirely chill month as there are some intriguing new titles to look forward to, but if you're wanting to scratch a few games off of your backlog list, now is the time to get cracking. So what is on the horizon for April?
Metroidvania fans will be in their element with several games this month, ranging from a biological journey inside of a faithful pooch to an African odyssey to restore order to a world where the dead deserve to rest in piece. Then there's Children of the Sun, a slick puzzle game where you have to figure out how to use a...
Xbox is having a hard time right now, and you don't need to be a genius to see it. Earlier this year we saw the console giant lay off almost 2000 workers with little explanation, while its studio acquisitions are yet to bear fruit worthy of competing with PlayStation. It has huge exclusives on the horizon, but the writing is on the wall that Microsoft will soon shift its strategy from the consoles it has traded on for decades to a service-based ecosystem and its own software.
Microsoft's games, as we've seen from recent ports of Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment alongside future plans for Sea of Thieves and Grounded, are being given a new lease of life on rival hardware in a clear attempt to recoup costs that perhaps Game Pass simply isn't...
When Stardew Valley first came out in 2016, it was positioned as a Harvest Moon-like. The comparison was the only way at the time to describe a low-stakes farming simulator with a village of locals to meet and perhaps marry. It's difficult to remember that now, in an era where "cozy gaming" has taken on a life of its own and "wholesome" games have their own showcases with hundreds of thousands of viewers, but Stardew was released into a different world. And then it made this one. Its latest major content release, the 1.6 update, is a testament to the game's longevity in the genre that it shaped.
Stardew Valley was a huge success when it launched; it sold a million copies in two months, and as of 2024, that number is 30 million...
At the moment, Metroid fans are waiting expectantly for the next entry in the series. While Metroid Prime 4 has been largely silent after its development restarted, Metroid Dread and Metroid Prime Remastered have given the old franchise some quality representation on the Nintendo Switch. Combined with various Metroid titles becoming available through Nintendo Switch Online, Metroid is in a much better state now than it was just a few years ago.
It's good to see it back, as the old series is one of Nintendo's biggest first party franchises, and fans were afraid that its story had reached an untimely end. For a decade after Metroid: Other M released on the Nintendo Wii, the only Metroid games released were the spin-off Federation Force...
While Nintendo franchises like Mario and Zelda may get more recognition in the mainstream gaming industry, the Metroid series has quietly been one of the most influential franchises for the company, and part of this influence comes from the expertly crafted title Super Metroid. The hype surrounding Metroid Prime 4's release demonstrates how far the franchise has come despite always being in the shadow of Nintendo's more popular series. Now, 30 years later, Super Metroidhas become a legendary title in the gaming space, contributing to the popularization of the action-adventure genre in both the AAA and Indie gaming spaces.
Super Metroid launched 30 years ago for the SNES and was developed by Intelligent Systems, who had developed the...
