As I open up the preview build of Frostpunk 2, I'm greeted with a vast snowy wasteland sprawling out from the beginnings of my disheveled settlement. I'm starting with just a tiny hub, built around a vast generator my citizens rely on for warmth. Resources are scarce, and I must begin by clearing some nearby ice to access food, fuel, and materials which I'll need to expand. If I make just one wrong decision, it could mean the death of everyone. The brief tutorial leads me through the creations of coal mines, resource centres, housing districts, and founding a council. It does a solid job of easing you into its many systems and mechanics, an impressive feat considering how complicated it can be for the uninitiated. Frostpunk 2 sees you...
Shortly after Destiny 2's Into the Light update, Bungie's shooter reached its highest concurrent player count on Steam in seven months and is maintaining solid numbers. Destiny 2's player health is likely in for another boost when The Final Shape expansion arrives in June. On April 9, Destiny 2's Into the Light update added an assortment of exciting features for returning and new fans alike to try out. The significant patch was headlined by the Onslaught PvE mode, Hall of Champions social space, returning BRAVE weapons, new PvP maps, and more, features that have clearly been tempting enough to bring a major upswing to Destiny 2's popularity. Destiny 2 hit a peak player count on Steam of just over 134,000 users on the day of Into the...
In the hours leading up to several gaming news events — like an indie event or a Nintendo Direct — you can see the rumblings of people online discussing a game called Hollow Knight: Silksong. Some share digital summoning circles constructed with emojis and dedicate them to the game in the hopes it will make an appearance at a showcase; others simply express their excitement by sharing memes prior to the event. During a digital event itself, you'll see viewers spam the live chat with messages like "SKONG [with four airhorn emojis]," or "WHERE SILKSONG????!!??" Sometimes, the phrase "Silksong" will even trend online before one of these events because so many people are sharing their excitement. All of this ruckus, just because fans just...

Back in December last year we heard how Konami and WayForward's upcoming release Contra: Operation Galuga would be getting a physical release from Limited Run containing the full game on a Switch cartridge. Now, in an update, Limited Run Games has revealed the standard, classic edition, and ultimate edition of the game. Pre-orders will open later today on 1st March 2024 and will close on 14th April 2024. Here's the full rundown of each version available: Standard Edition - USD $39.99 Classic Edition - USD $69.99 Includes: Physical Copy of Contra...
Last September, Imagineer announced superstar virtual idol Hatsune Miku would be getting her own Fitness Boxing game. It seems the same title has now been rated 'E' for everyone by the ESRB in North America - seemingly confirming a local release is on the way. Here's the official description: This follows on from a rating for the game by the Australian Classification Board on 18th March 2024. It received 'G' for general and references "general online interactivity". As mentioned in the original Japanese announcement, this game allows players to enjoy boxing exercises under the guidance of the famous idol. Hatsune Miku's tracks also feature in the game including her main theme.

Hololive VTuber Korone takes over Tsugunohi as an "Evil God" Japanese Hololive VTuber 'Korone' has done all sorts of collabs and crossovers, and with this in mind, the Tsugunohi horror game 'Evil God Korone' has now got a surprise release on the Switch eShop. This title originally launched on Steam back in 2021 and is priced at $4.49 (or the regional equivalent) on the Switch eShop. Below is a bit about it and you can check out the trailer in the video above. Will you be purchasing this surprise Switch eShop release? Have you played Tsugunohi before? Let us know in the comments.
Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed gives Warren Spector's vision of a Mickey Mouse game a much needed new coat of paint, allowing a game about not forgetting the past to live on. 14 years ago, Disney's Epic Mickey was released exclusive to the Nintendo Wii, which is the only place it's been playable since. It is, at the moment, shackled to the Wii--480p resolution, motion controls, and all. If you want to legally play the game today, you'd have to get your hands on a Wii (or a WiiU, for you select few), get a hard copy of the game, and pop it in. That would have remained the case, however, if it weren't for its upcoming remake Epic Mickey Rebrushed which aims to bring the original game's experience to modern consoles, with updated visuals...
The highly rumored seventh installment of Ubisoft's Far Cry series needs to ensure that one of its narrative staples is up to snuff. Ubisoft's Far Cry series has found itself in uncharted territory in recent years. After consistently releasing high-profile main entries interspersed with expansions and spin-offs of varying length (and quality), Far Cry's presence in the FPS open-world genre it helped popularize has been less prominent compared to its previous patterns, with the series having gone its longest now since FC 6 in 2021 without another entry. In addition, the studio has kept mostly quiet about its status and plans, leaving many fans wondering about its future direction. Far Cry's foundational formula largely consists of...
Cozy games have carved out quite the niche for themselves, and on April 22, fans of The Sims and Stardew Valley will get to hear all about a new one. Though it's been around for at least a few decades, the cozy video game genre has hit a new golden age of late, and it's all thanks to games like The Sims and Stardew Valley. While cozy games can come in many different shapes and sizes, some of the most frequent features in the genre are the ability to heavily customize the player's in-game living space, complete an ever-growing checklist of repetitive yet relaxing tasks, and use a set of life-simulation mechanics to control a character's needs and desires. Over the last few years, the cozy game genre has seen an influx of new entries...
Dragon Age: Dreadwolf could have the most interesting protagonist in the series if BioWare sticks to its promise about the character. There hasn't been much information revealed for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf as yet. However, in all the trailers and other content for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf that has been released, one thing that BioWare has driven home every time is that the protagonist of the story is going to be someone normal and unremarkable, aka someone who isn't "the chosen one". This is a 180-degree turn from Dragon Age: Inquisition, but Dragon Age has seen a protagonist like this before with Hawke in Dragon Age 2. Hawke was also marketed as a normal person who was shaped into someone greater by the events around them, but this was...
Heavily inspired by the game mechanics of Battle City (a popular game during the '80s), newly-announced Threads of War is designed in the style of Ukrainian embroidery. The visual style particularly attracted my attention. War and embroidery may seem like complete opposites, but many Ukrainian artists have used the skillful craft (crafty skill?) as a sign of rebellion. Using the aforementioned mechanics combined with roguelite progression, the game has players experience the liberation of Ukrainian cities during the first year of full-scale war. Players begin in Hostomel, continue in Kyiv and other cities, and end at the last "boss" in 2022: the battle for Kherson. Levels become more challenging as Threads of War progresses, with...
Indie games are struggling more than ever now, and only you can save them You could be forgiven for thinking indie games are thriving right now. Last night's triple-I indie showcase announced Slay the Spire 2, which will undoubtedly be a huge hit, among a host of other cute and quirky games. I loved the recent indie release Death of a Wish, and Devolver Digital's latest releases Pepper Grinder and Children of the Sun both launched to excellent reviews and widespread media coverage. The absence of big triple-A hitters in 2024 is starting to be felt in this post-Final Fantasy, Like A Dragon, and Dragon's Dogma world. You might be able to argue that Stellar Blade is triple-A – its scope certainly seems up there – but it's a new IP and...
With Dawntrail just over two months away, Final Fantasy 14 will put a bookend on its 10th-anniversary celebrations via its annual, 14-hour broadcast. As Square Enix prepares to launch a new expansion, the 10th anniversary of Final Fantasy 14 will officially conclude on April 12 and 13 with the ninth annual 14-hour Broadcast. Since the game's storied downfall and rebirth in the early 2010s, Final Fantasy 14 has risen from the ashes and become one of the most beloved entries in the Final Fantasy franchise. The upcoming broadcast will be a bookend to one chapter, and the start of another. On July 2, Final Fantasy 14 will release its fifth expansion, Dawntrail, which is stated to be the start of a new saga in the world of Etheirys...
Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is just around the corner, which means time's running out to get ready for its arrival. Shadow of the Erdtree is set to be absolutely massive; according to director Hidetaka Miyazaki, the addition will be approximately the size of Elden Ring's starting area, Limgrave. In other words, you'll have a lot to dig into come June 21, including finding out what happened to the game's most mysterious demigod — but only if you're prepared for it. If you're not sure how to prepare for the expansion or simply haven't played the base game in ages, don't worry. Here's everything you need to do in Elden Ring before Shadow of the Erdtree. REACH AND DEFEAT MOHG TO GAIN ACCESS While you don't have to...
HoldHold on to your parsnips, because an apocalypse has struck the pastoral lands of Stardew Valley. No, it wasn't a game-breaking bug or new content. Rather, the highly anticipated Stardew Valley 1.6 update introduced changes that overhauled the back end and rendered several of its most popular mods completely useless. While mod compatibility might not be at the top of mind for every fan, it's paramount in the larger Stardew Valley community, where a single mod might have more than 10 million downloads. Now, the 1.6 update has kicked off a frenzied scramble among its enthusiast creators to fix their content and mitigate the effects of what people in the community are calling the "modpocalypse." But it's not all bad news. Update 1.6...
Developer OutOfTheBit definitely has experience with cinematic puzzle platformers: Full Void was all about handcrafted 2D art, innovative mechanics, and atmospheric storytelling. OutOfTheBit is taking on that genre again with Nanuka: Secret of the Shattering Moon. Announced today, the game promises to fuse handcrafted animations, engaging combat, and magical adventure. This is all set in a believably fantastical world. It is set to launch in early 2025. Nanuka's journey in a world inspired by the Sicilian landscape begins on an island. It seems peaceful and picturesque until a tale of magical abilities and a looming disaster reveals itself. It's up to Nanuka to prevent the threat at hand. As the story progresses, importance is placed...
This year has proven to be a pretty exciting first half for gaming. There have been some big surprises that kicked the year off with a bang, and it looks like the week of May 16 is set to bring some more titles to the forefront. From the surprising success of Helldivers 2 to larger titles, like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, not meeting sales expectations, the first half of 2024 has been unpredictable. The unpredictability of the year's first quarter has been exciting to watch unfold, and as the next phase of the year comes into focus, many new games await. However, one of the most exciting release windows to look forward to is the middle of May. As of right now, the week of May 16 is stacked with some strong contenders that...
Square Enix has dropped a ton of information about SaGa Emerald Beyond, the latest standalone title in the SaGa franchise that was first announced during a Nintendo Direct last September. The game features six protagonists in five unique story arcs; you can play the same arc two times and get two different experiences thanks to the branching plot points based on choices. There are 17 unique worlds, including a forest of skyscrapers and a world governed by five witches. Today's news about SaGa Emerald Beyond includes information on (and a trailer for) one of the main characters (Diva No. 5), the National Extradimensional Exploratory Task Force, characters who can join the retinue, three worlds, and the battle system. Let's tackle that...
I'm not going to sugarcoat it: I have developed what might be described as an unhealthy obsession with certain reality TV shows. 1999 was integral when it comes to some of the shows that I'm still watching: it was the year Big Brother was created, and The Real World and Road Rules were continuing to dominate MTV alongside the second season of The Challenge (it was still called Real World/Road Rules Challenge). So just imagine my excitement when darkly comic reality TV thirst-person shooter The Crush House was announced today. Set in 1999 Malibu, the game has players produce each season of a reality show. It should be chaotic in the best of ways! Jae has just become the producer of the hottest reality show around, The Crush House. But...
