An incredible expansion mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is available now, and it's completely free. It's a good thing these fan-made Elder Scrolls expansions keep coming, because God knows we've still got a long wait for The Elder Scrolls VI ahead of us. Fortunately, there are plenty of DLC-sized expansions to choose from, adding new content to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Oblivion, and of course The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It's Oblivion that's the topic of today's discussion though, specifically the Journey to the Centre of Nirn expansion, which adds an entirely new area, new quests and new faces to annoy with the in-game dialogue. Compared to its younger brother Skyrim, I'd argue Oblivion doesn't quite get the love it...
Putting aside the disruptions of Covid, 2024 feels like the strangest calendar for gaming releases I have ever experienced. We haven't even reached the end of April, and we've had three huge RPG GOTY contenders in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Dragon's Dogma 2. Add in Tekken 8, Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, and the upcoming Stellar Blade, and it feels like the year is crammed. But then looking ahead, it's a bit of a wasteland. You can throw out some names, but not enough to plug the gaps. We have Hellblade 2 next month, and then Indiana Jones and Avowed at some point in 2024 (though I suspect one gets delayed). Star Wars Outlaws will hit in summer, and there are rumours Dragon Age Dreadwolfcould arrive...
Supergiant Games has never made a sequel. Instead, it's a studio that has consistently iterated and innovated with each subsequent game, arguably culminating in the team's greatest work to date: Hades. The engrossing roguelite dazzled with tight and engaging combat, an iconic visual presentation, and novel take on a persistent narrative that interweaves the progression of its story with its repeating gameplay loop. If Supergiant Games were ever going to commit to a sequel, Hades definitely provided the most fertile ground for further development, ensuring that its follow-up has a strong foundation established in a proven hit. Hades II's technical test is a small slice of the game and a very quick look at how Supergiant plans to build on...
For any video game to realise its full potential, it's not the best philosophy to rush any project and the title that is the topic of today's discussion is a prime example of that prospect. The open-world survival genre is more packed than any horde seen in AMC's The Walking Dead and it's difficult to stand out from the crowd especially when it's competing with the likes of Minecraft, Valheim and DayZ to name a few. Check out the 7 Days to Die: Alpha Exodus dev diary below! One game that initially struggled to stand out from the crowd is 7 Days to Die which was originally released in 2013 on PC as an early access title. 7 Days to Die did receive a poorly-received port on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016 which has a woeful...
With the surprise announcement of Slay the Spire 2 at the first ever Triple-i Initiative indie showcase, fans of the original game have been thrown into a frenzy. Here's what's known so far about the upcoming sequel to one of 2019's most beloved roguelikes. Released in 2019 (though available via Steam Early Access since 2017), the original Slay the Spire was a smash hit. Incorporating and building on elements from Netrunner, Dominion, and FTL: Faster Than Light, the game combined roguelike exploration, permadeath, and the gradual card acquisition of tabletop board games in a bright and fun fantasy package. Receiving rave reviews, Slay the Spire became an instant favorite of a number of notable Twitch streamers and was quickly ushered...
I've probably played World of Warcraft too much over my years on this planet. Spending hours levelling, raiding, doing dungeons, or just hanging out in Orgrimmar watching other players go by; it's one of the biggest time sinks out there. As you get older and undertake more responsibilities it can be harder to spend as much time in the game that once ate your life. We spoke to WoW's executive producer, Holly Longdale, about how the next expansion aims to help Azeroth's many time-strapped solo players. While World of Warcraft has always been fairly accessible for players who adventure by themselves, it's an MMORPG at heart. As such, there's certain roadblocks in the way unless you've got a team at your beck and call. With new features...
The original Tails of Iron was quietly a big success for developer Odd Bug Studio. The action RPG about a kingdom of rats has drawn in a lot of fans thanks to its sketch-like art style, deliberate combat, and explorable world. We suppose the fact it's narrated by Doug Cockle — voice of Geralt in The Witcher series — may have something to do with it too, but whatever the case, the team isn't resting on its laurels for Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter. After watching the sequel in action in a hands-off preview, it's clear there's plenty here to stop it from growing stail — sorry, stale. Though it's a numbered sequel, Tails of Iron 2 follows a whole new story with fresh characters. Set after the events of the first game, you play as...
I'm almost ashamed to admit that I forgot how good Hades was. The roguelike took over my life for months when I picked it up back in 2020, but after unlocking all the weapons, finding perfect boon combinations, and maxing out friendships with every character, I never looked back. Such is the curse of someone who writes about games for a living, we must always be moving onto the next big thing, never taking a break to look back at the things we loved of yesteryear. In the three years since, I've not found another roguelike quite roguelike it. I've tried my hand at plenty, but I've come to the conclusion that I was spoiled. Hades was my first proper entry into the genre, and it's yet to be bettered. Its sequel, Hades 2, is trying to do...
Surprise! Hades 2 is finally here and playable. Supergiant's hack-and-slash, flirt-with-gods roguelike is a brief technical test away from its Steam early access debut. I've slashed my way through its opening area and first boss and now I need more. Even though it's clearly in an unfinished state, it's good. Like, really good. A small part of me was a little hesitant to see Supergiant do its first direct sequel. Every game since 2011's Bastion has taken us to completely different worlds with new approaches to combat. I wasn't even a huge fan of Pyre, but I respect any game that is brave enough to mix strategic action with sports game elements à la NBA Jam. Bastion was my favorite until Hades grabbed that torch and brought it into the...
After two disappointing expansions in a row, World of Warcraft's 2022 Dragonflight expansion righted the ship with its back-to-basics approach and focus on evergreen features. The numbers, as they say, don't lie, and Blizzard has reported increased player retention and recovering subscription numbers over the last two years, thanks not only to Dragonflight but a steady stream of new content and events that have kept players coming back for more. It's not surprising then that the long-running MMORPG's next expansion, The War Within, is looking to continue that trajectory, and from my hands-on time playing the expansion's alpha, it succeeds in that goal. Like Dragonflight, The War Within puts more of an emphasis on game-wide features...
With each day taking us closer to the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, players are desperate to know what we can expect from the long-awaited sequel. Other than a confirmation of the game existing and the first trailer being released in December of last year, Rockstar are remaining pretty tight-lipped about what fans can expect from Grand Theft Auto 6. This is perhaps unsurprising considering 2022 saw the company become the victims of hacking after one person decided to leak over 90 gameplay videos online which resulted in them being sentenced to indefinite detention in a secure hospital in December of last year. Since then, fans were treated to Grand Theft Auto 6's first official trailer which gave us a sneak peek at our two...
If you've been wanting to try out the new 3D platformer Penny's Big Breakaway before you buy it, now you can. Developer Evening Star and publisher Private Division have released a demo on the Switch eShop which you can download for free and see what it's all about. Private Division's head of business development Blake Rochkind added to this announcement how the team wanted to make sure as many people as possible could get their hands on this particular game because it's a title where "playing is believing". Although Penny's Big Breakaway had some bugs at launch and was also capped at 30 frames per second on Switch, the developer released an update at the end of last month adding a new "performance mode", running at "60fps" in most...
Supergiant Games has announced that the Hades II Technical Test will begin shortly, before the game launches into Early Access. Supergiant Games explained that the Technical Test will only contain the first major area of the game and other early-game characters and content. It's far less content than will be in the Early Access version so that the studio can solve any technical issues beforehand. Additionally, the Technical Test might only be available to a small group of players relative to those that sign up. In order to sign up, simply just go to the Hades II Steam page and click "Request Access" on the section that says "Hades II Playtest." After doing so, you should get a confirmation saying that you'll receive an email from the...
The mid-90s were a great time to be a gamer with the likes of SEGA, Nintendo and newcomer PlayStation battling it out to be the most popular video game console in our homes. While PlayStation was the new kid on the scene, SEGA and PlayStation were already the top two brands in the market with the likes of iconic mascots Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario leading the charge. That being said, it's the iconic Nintendo mascot that is the topic of today's discussion. Check out the Super Mario 3D All-Stars trailer below! Released in 1996, Super Mario 64 helped to break the mold of what fans expected to see from everyone's favorite stereotypical Italian plumber. No longer was the Super Mario Bros. series exclusively a 2D platformer, it was...
It's going to be a long, long time until CD Projekt RED is ready to unveil more on the upcoming Project Orion, the official sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Given that Phantom Liberty is set to be the game's only expansion, its release last year marked the end of an era. Fair to say that between Phantom Liberty and Update 2.0, developers have finally delivered on the vision they once promised. The last couple of years have been transformative for Cyberpunk 2077 and while no further expansions are on the way, executive producer Maciej Włodarkiewicz did tease something following last week's BAFTA Best Evolving game win. "I don't want to promise anything but definitely, Cyberpunk is deep in our hearts and if we find any reasonable way to keep...
It has been 19 years since Mario Kart DS first hit the tracks. That's a pretty staggering length of time and one that we'll probably need a little sit down to fully recover from. But hey, while we freak out about the passing of the years, check this out: speedrunners have found a handful of new shortcuts on the DS' previously pretty water-tight circuits (thanks, Gaming Reinvented). The biggie here is on the Waluigi Pinball track where a shortcut that was previously discovered in tool-assisted speedruns (TAS) has been seemingly proven humanly possible by speedrunner iMathII. It's a tricky manoeuvre that requires the driver to hit a section of the spiral track just right, but if done correctly, the kart is hurled across a large portion...
I'm playing through Broken Roads right now. It's basically "if Fallout was set in Australia," or "if Mad Max was made into a game that actually respected Mad Max as a concept," and I'm loving it. I'll have a full review later on this week, but I wanted to use the game as an excuse to talk about something else – something that I've championed over many years now, and yet the games industry is still struggling to provide it: We need more RPGs that represent specific cultures, rather than act as a homogenised blend of fantasy tropes. When you think about it, there are only really a couple of cultural settings for RPGs. You've got Japan and the mighty JRPG. In those cases the games are often not set in Japan but to carry the themes and...
Bethesda's Fallout 4 will be making its debut on the Epic Games Store come April 25. Right now is a great time to be a fan of the Fallout franchise. The Fallout TV series has been a huge hit on Amazon, and Bethesda is capitalizing on this momentum by bringing content to the video games as well, including Fallout 4. Fallout 4 is the latest main series entry in the long-running, open world RPG, post-apocalyptic franchise. It was first released in 2015 and earned rave reviews from critics, though there were some criticisms aimed at the voiced protagonist and technical shortcomings. Bethesda supported Fallout 4 with regular updates and DLC expansions, giving fans good reason to stick with the game for the long haul. Soon PC gamers will...
The Epic Games Store is still going strong with its weekly free game promotion. Ever since 2019, the Epic Games Store has given away one or two free titles each week, with rotation of what's available occuring every Thursday at 10 AM CT. Out of everything given away, quite a lot of interesting options have been available on the Epic Games Store for 2024 from The Outer Worlds, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus, and a few incidental double deals between weeks. While it's rather normal to expect only one freebie on the storefront per week, sometimes players will get lucky and have two games to grab at no extra cost, but that shouldn't be what fans expect every time they check out the free games on the Epic Games Store. It appears that the...
Publisher SelectaPlay and developer Hungry Pixel have announced NetherWorld for Switch, an action-adventure narrative experience making its way to the console in 2025. Boasting some stylish pixel art visuals, Netherworld looks absolutely bonkers, and it's right up our alley. It also doesn't look like it's particularly suitable for younger players, so don't be fooled by the jaunty music in the trailer; there are definitely a few 'Conker' vibes with this one. It stars Medoo, a curious little jellyfish who finds himself in a dark and mysterious land after drowning his sorrows in a bottle of vodka. There, you'll need to navigate the world, meet a boatload of weird and wonderful characters, and fight fearsome (and disgusting) bosses...
