A new NES clone has appeared online which offers RGB and HDMI right out of the box. The 'Lava FC' is currently available on AliExpress for £240 and runs physical Famicom cartridges. It makes use of the open-source Lava RGB mod, and also offers S-Video and Composite support. HDMI output tops out at 720p, and the current firmware allows for colour palettes and variable scanlines. More features are expected to be added in future firmware updates, according to creator Retro Castle. Previous clone systems have included the Retro AVS and Analogue NT.
When Nintendo announced back in 2019 that it was releasing a pair of remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind — and better yet that they were being published internationally — it initially came as a bit of a shock. The series, which had originally debuted on the Famicom Disk System back in 1988, had up until that point never received an official English localization, with only a few diehard fans outside of Japan having had some experience with the mystery titles thanks to the 2004 fan translation of the 1998 SNES remake of The Girl Who Stands Behind. As a result, they weren't exactly a prime contender for undergoing the remake treatment, lacking the name recognition of, say, a Zelda...
We're huge fans of point-and-click adventure games here at Time Extension, with Lucasfilm Games' Maniac Mansion ranking high on the list of our favourite games in the genre. So when we learned about Cronela's Mansion — an upcoming adventure game inspired by the classic 1987 graphic adventure — we couldn't help but take notice. The game is the work of Straynus, a homebrew developer apparently based in Spain, and is being built for a range of retro and modern machines including NES, SNES, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy/Game Boy Color, PC/MS-DOS, and Nintendo Switch. It was originally revealed back in February of this year and will be funded on Kickstarter sometime this Summer. We first came across the project thanks to Straynus's constant...
If you have an affinity for the late '80s and early-to-mid '90s anime aesthetic and retro first-person shooters, then, boy, do we have the game for you. Mullet Madjack is an upcoming Steam game from the Brazilian developer Hammer95 that is releasing later this month on May 15th and only recently came to our attention, thanks to its impressive launch date trailer. It mixes frantic gunplay with phenomenal cyberpunk visuals and hearkens back to a time when streaming sites were non-existent and anime was primarily distributed on VHS tape. The game takes in 2090 in a world where man and the internet have merged into one and where people need a sudden burst of dopamine every 10 seconds to survive. Players step into the role of a moderator...
After rumour got out about an upcoming NES Edition release for the famed Nintendo World Championships, Nintendo has officially unveiled the new game, titled "Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition". The title seems to be similar in gameplay and focus (kind of a successor even) to what the NES Remix titles were in the Wii U, with timed challenges being available from a wide variety of NES titles, like the original The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 & 3, Ice Climbers, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Excitebike and much more, with up to 13 NES games to choose from. Completed challenges and their times can be shared online to compete for the top spot, a "Speedrun Mode" is included to play for the best possible times, and a "Party Mode"...
The Fourth Generation of videogame consoles, comprising the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive primarily, had a strong number of censored content in several games, and even entire games and franchises that didn't even saw the light of day outside Japan. One such case was that of "The Hybrid Front", a turn-based strategy game released back in 1994 for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, which involved a rather complex plot regarding the worldwide depletion of fossil oil, social instability, with several wars that rising from those conflicts, with a corporate power taking control over the planet. The game plays in a very similar fashion to that of Fire Emblen and Advance Wars, for those familiar with those...
PixelHeart has finally offered a bit more information on its upcoming action-platformer Gladmort. According to a recent Twitter post, a Kickstarter for the project will go live on May 6th, 2024 at 6pm CEST, with versions of the game planned for the Neo Geo, Sega Dreamcast, and Steam. A few other platforms also seemed to be in the works too, but the Neo Geo-CD doesn't currently seem to be among them despite the company's previous statements. You can click the link here and register to be notified when the Kickstarter launches. The publisher PixelHeart seems to be gearing up to make an announcement about its upcoming Ghost 'n Goblins-esque title Gladmort, putting out a video today asking for the community's help to take the Neo Geo...
The Sega Mega Drive / Genesis classic Revenge of Shinobi is getting a fan-made "remake" on the 32-bit Sega Saturn. Coded by Pigsy (the same person who is bringing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to the Mega Drive) using Johannes Fetz's JoEngine, this update will boast more background layers, improved colours, better animation, a CD-quality soundtrack and "more open" level design. Originally released in Japan as The Super Shinobi in 1989, the game is a sequel to the 1987 arcade release Shinobi. A dazzling showcase of the Mega Drive's power, it also boasts an incredible soundtrack from Yuzo Koshiro. The game would be followed by the arcade title Shadow Dancer (the Mega Drive version of which is a totally unique game) and Shinobi...
