When it comes to the world of video game music, few composers have as impressive a body of work as Hitoshi Sakimoto, which is ironic as he never initially set out to be a musician in the first place. A self-proclaimed "science and technology geek", Sakimoto got his start as a programmer and composer as a teenager on Revolter — a vertical shoot 'em up for the PC8801SR created by a small group of video game makers — where he contributed to the music and wrote the sound driver "Terpischorean" (which was later used in countless other Japanese games). At the time, despite contributing music to Revolter, he was mostly content on being a video game programmer, but backed by the encouragement of both his friends and colleagues, he later made...
It's fair to say that the recent announcement of the ModRetro Chromatic caused quite a stir. It's a brand-new FPGA replica of the Game Boy that not only runs all Game Boy and Game Boy Color software but also boasts a custom display which replicates the look of the original in painstaking detail. The launch is coming this Christmas, with units costing $200 / £160. Keen to learn more about what makes Chromatic so special, we were fortunate enough to speak with ModRetro CEO and Engineer Torin Herndon. What makes the Game Boy such a special system that we're still seeing new variants decades after it launched? I think people (including myself) long for an era where casual handheld gaming wasn't dominated by phones. In the Game Boy era...
The original Volgarr The Viking might have flown under a lot of folks' radar when it launched back in 2013, but it's one of those games where if you know, you know. It garnered a solid 8/10 from us when it landed on Switch and it's cultivated a hardcore, dedicated fanbase whose members are constantly speedrunning the game. Its precise level design and enemy placement met with widespread critical acclaim, but developer Crazy Viking Studios had no intention of ever making a sequel. What gives, then? Volgarr the Viking II, a brand-new entry starring everyone's favorite grizzled Midgardian, is just around the corner, launching on the Switch eShop on 6th August. What changed the studio's mind? Well, we sat down to speak with Kris...
BitSummit, held in Kyoto every sweltering hot summer, plays host to an incredible amount of indie developers from across the globe. As you might expect, it can be rather hard to stand out – so much so that it was even difficult for us to curate a list of impressive Switch games down to only 10 titles this year. However, Cassette Boy, with its muted Game Boy-like color palette, exuded so much retro charm that we couldn't help but play it more than once, chatting with the sole developer Kiyoshi Honda whenever he had a moment to spare from the hordes lining up to play his game. We sat down with the Nintendo Switch version of Cassette Boy for our first go around, later coming back to hammer through some challenge levels on a Steam Deck. A...
An hour isn't anywhere near enough to get a feel for what any kind of RPG will offer, let alone a Soulslike. Imagine trying to predict what Elden Ring is if you're only able to reach the limits of that first, lush forest before the demo taps out? You can't. All you can do is walk away with a promise for what is to come. This is my experience with AI Limit. The developers provided me with a look at the first hour of gameplay, which is essentially the introductory area, and I've walked away with a promise. Thankfully, it's a very strong one. Will AI Limit redefine the genre and challenge Elden Ring? Probably not, but as a first effort from a scrappy first-time developer, taking a swing at a monumentally difficult genre, I was almost...
Last month, the digital distributor GOG surprised everyone when it announced it was bringing the original Resident Evil trilogy back to PC, after years of the games being difficult to find and play on modern PCs. For the Polish company that often cites commercial preservation as one of its primary aims, it was a major win, giving old and new players an easy way to officially acquire the uncut versions of the survival horror classics. However, it also got people wondering what exactly went into bringing them back, and perhaps more interestingly, whether we'll see any more classic Capcom titles coming to GOG in the future. So, earlier this month, we reached out to GOG and put some questions to Marcin Paczyński, the senior business...
While many people will default to places like London, Manchester and Guilford when asked what they consider to be the UK's most significant place when it comes to video game development, the midlands is (or was) the home to the likes of Rare, Core Design, Blitz Games, Playground Games, Codemasters, Ultimate: Play the Game, Playtonic, Free Radical Design and many, many other companies – which gives us enough reason to think of it as the nation's "Silicon Valley", at least in terms of video game production. The recent Nottingham Video Game Expo, which took place on the 20th and 21st July 2024, lends some credence to our viewpoint; the event could be seen as a small-scale successor to the mighty GameCity celebration, which has sadly been...
We don't think it's an exaggeration to call Roguecraft one of the most hotly anticipated Amiga games in recent memory Created by the Norwegian development studio Badger Punch Games, it is an ambitious follow-up to the spectacular Commodore 64 homebrew Rogue 64 — a game that earned a ton of praise upon its release in 2022 from indie outlets as well as from more mainstream outlets like Destructoid. As its name suggests, the game is a roguelike inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft and sees players exploring a maze of dungeons as one of three character archetypes (a fighter, a rogue, or a mage), in search of unimaginable treasure. Along the way, there are various secrets, items, and enemies to encounter, with the ultimate goal being to...
2002's The Thing is widely regarded as one of the best horror games based on an existing media franchise. Many licensed horror games are sadly relegated to genres that require a specific setup, such as asymmetrical multiplayer or short VR experiences, but The Thing — a third-person squad-based shooter — dared to go one step further, telling its own unique story that serves as a proper sequel to John Carpenter's 1982 movie masterpiece. It's not a game that frequents mainstream remaster wishlists, but Nightdive Studios is nevertheless delivering what few of us realised we wanted with The Thing: Remastered. Announced during IGN Live and scheduled to land on the Switch later this year, Computer Artworks' original is getting the full revamp...

Another Not-E3 has come and gone, and some of the games have since moved into my brain to live rent-free. And by some, I mean ten. The genres in this group of games range from narrative adventures to cozy puzzles to mech platformers, but I definitely seem drawn to the cute or the unconventional titles more than others. I've noticed that I also gravitate towards indie development studios, so that description covers nearly all of the games on this list. What can I say? I have awesome taste! What games caught your interest during the 16 or so showcases of Not-E3? I'd love to hear your opinions! Copycat (Spoonful of Wonder, Neverland Entertainment, Nuuvem Inc.) Copycat appears to be a happy game at first. Dawn the cat is being adopted...

I have two things to say before I get started on my highlights of the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. One: screw Call of Duty, I'm not watching that or writing about it past a release date. Two: I don't care if this was a showcase for Xbox generally speaking, this header is going to be of Max because she's the only thing that matters here. Or ever. (I may have a problem. It was dormant for a bit but now it's too late for us all.) Game highlightsSouth of Midnight (Xbox Game Studios, Compulsion Games) Compulsion Games is a Canadian gem. What those people come up with is always steeped in hidden meaning while also being delightfully yet creepily strange. I'd hate to see inside their brains. You can tell what this trailer is right away because...
Following upon the Summer Game Fest is Microsoft, who is set to take the stage and show what Xbox has on offer for its fans. The Xbox Games Showcase begins soon, and everything announced at the event will be notated here. Follow along with our coverage, or share your thoughts on all things Xbox, when the stream kicks off at 12pm CT. We begin on a reiteration that Xbox owns Activision now, with the reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Shoot stuff and blow even more stuff up, in the name of America. It's set directly after the Cold War, in 1991. After this show, a 25-minute trailer will drop, giving fans a longer look at further details. Xbox will be releasing all Call of Duty content for all platforms with parity, now. Betas included...
Day of the Devs is another showcase featuring many, many, many great-looking games from independent developers. This year, there seems to be a good amount of my fellow Canadians on the list – congrats y'all, happy to see you! I've highlighted a handful of my favorite games shown off today but as always, I recommend checking out the entire showcase so you don't miss a word! Game highlights Battle Vision Network (Capybara Games) You might know Capybara Games from one of its previous titles, which include Grindstone, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, and Below. The developer's next game is Battle Vision Network, combining cozy puzzle solving gameplay and fast-paced battles into one online PvP title. Go one on one with teams worldwide while...
Devolver Directs are always a highlight of this hectic week, mostly because each one is crazier than the last. Last year's Devolver Direct featured Wizard with a Gun, The Talos Principle II, Baby Steps, and Human Fall Flat 2; that's a pretty big line-up, but I think this year's is bigger and better! You have no free time. You also have no job and no relationship. You are very, very passionate about Devolver Digital though. And it's Volvy's 15th birthday! Happy birthday Volvy! Time to host a party, but it better be good so you're not embarrassed. A birthday isn't just about looking backwards, it's about considering the future. Last year was great, but the next could be even better! Volvy might even do something truly unexpected… Video...
E3 may be gone, but it's not forgotten, as the trend of a massive Summer video game showcase still lives on in the form of the Summer Game Fest. Promising two hour of announcements and trailers, there will be a lot to see in the presentation. If you're interested in tuning in live, you can catch the show on YouTube and Twitch, when it kicks off at 5pm ET/10pm BST. The host of Summer Game Fest made an official statement clarifying that while there will be some new games shown, viewers may need to adjust their expectations, because a bulk of the presentation's content will focus on updates for pre-existing games. As always, if you're not interested enough to watch the full 2 hours, GBAtemp will, and summarize every announcement made here...
