Farming sims are great: you can be one with nature without ever having to step foot outside. That may sound lazy to some but as someone who is super sensitive to the sun and heat, farming sims give me an experience I wouldn't otherwise actually enjoy. I'm always on the lookout for something in the genre that feels fresh – something like Mirthwood. I wrote about the upcoming medieval fantasy RPG life-sim adventure game when it was first announced, drawn to it due to the developer's inspiration of Fable and Stardew Valley. My excitement only grows with the narrated gameplay trailer that has dropped for Steam Farm Fest. At the beginning of Mirthwood, you've fled a continent swept with war to a new land. Each day in Mirthwood is filled...
The Earth Defense Force series may have started as an offshoot of the Simple series, but it has developed a cult following all of its own. The latest title, Earth Defense Force 6, launched for PlayStation in Japan during August 2022. This March, the game was released in Asia (again for PlayStation) with English audio and text. The English version was the big hint that Earth Defense Force 6 would be hitting North America and Europe relatively soon – and that has now been confirmed! D3 Publisher is bringing the game to the West for PC and PlayStation in late July. June of last year was the 20th anniversary of the Earth Defense Force series. It's crazy to think that it has already been two decades of relentless alien invasions, valiant...
Drawing inspiration from Toy Story and Small Soldiers, Hypercharge: Unboxed is a shooter featuring sentient action figures from indie developer Digital Cybercherries. Already available on PC, the developer has today revealed the Xbox launch date for the game and aired a new trailer for the occasion: Hypercharge: Unboxed's story campaign mode can be played either in solo offline or online with up to 4-players in co-op. Split-screen play, both locally and online, is also supported. This Xbox release will have cross-platform support for the PC version. The game can also be played with or against bots. Hypercharge: Unboxed launches on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One on May 31st.
Developer Spike Chunsoft has aired a new trailer for Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. Aptly titled Master and Apprentice Trailer, this new footage pits masters and apprentices together while also revealing new characters that join the game's roster. The new trailer adds the following 10 characters to the ever-expanding roster which now has a total of 61 characters announced: Gohan (Kid) Gohan (Adult) Gohan (Future) Gohan (Future), Super Saiyan Trunks (Sword) Trunks (Sword), Super Saiyan Videl Beerus Whis Master Roshi Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. A release window has yet to be announced.
Promise Mascot Agency has the most curious genre description I've seen in quite some time: open world mascot management crime drama. Management, crime, and drama are all great (and common) genres. But mascot management? What the heck?! That's so cool it should already be a thing! I love when developers are creative enough to think outside the box; with Promise Mascot Agency, Kaizen Game Works is definitely on a pioneering path (much like it was with 2020's Paradise Killer). Disgraced yakuza lieutenant Michi finds himself exiled to a cursed town with the end goal of turning a bankrupt mascot agency into a functioning business once more. Michi struggles with this new life, but he still needs to focus on rebuilding the business with the...
Sometimes all it takes is a specific art style to draw someone to a game, hence why I was attracted to Dungeons of Hinterberg like a moth to a flame. The graphics for this action RPG slash social sim slash dungeon crawler are beautifully colorful and perfectly cel-shaded, a favorite technique of mine. Dungeons of Hinterberg has almost seemed like a fever dream to this point for whatever reason, but today's announcement of a launch date (and the release of a new trailer) makes it feel very much real. Set in the beautiful alpine village of Hinterberg in the Austrian Alps, Dungeons of Hinterberg combines hack'n'slash action with puzzle-solving and social sim elements. Players head out on a vacation to the modern-day village. Most people...
Rarely am I left speechless, but the reveal trailer for Lost Records: Bloom & Rage did just that. Very little was known about the upcoming Don't Nod game at the time (December 2023) – so little that I had to put in a catch-up – but we did learn that it is the start of a new IP (Lost Records) and the first game developed by Don't Nod's new Montreal studio. The story-driven game begins in 1995 when four friends create an unbreakable bond… yet they don't speak until 27 years later when they have to confront something that happened that summer. Today, Don't Nod released a new trailer for the game and some information about what (or who) to expect. Despite all of this, the content of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage still seems very hush-hush and...
If you're a fan of sci-fi and RPGs, then you'll want to keep an eye out for Beyond Galaxyland later this year, because it looks like a doozy. Created by Chicago-based developer and music producer, Sam Enright, you play as highschooler Doug as he's whisked off to discover an artificial solar system known as 'Galaxyland'. You'll be planet-hopping alonside your adorable gun-toting guinea pig pet Boom Boom and sentient robot Martybot while meeting a plethora of interesting and unique characters. As for the gameplay, Beyond Galaxyland will feature classic turn-based RPG battles and light puzzle-solving as you explore the many weird and wonderful worlds contained within Galaxyland. We won't lie, it looks and sounds incredible ambitious and...
Publisher Little Nook and developer Hyper Luminal Games have today announced that the cosy adventure game Pine Hearts will be bringing all of the emotions to Switch on 23rd May. Billed as a "love letter to all those who have experienced loss," Pine Hearts will see you playing as Tyke and setting off through the titular caravan park which they used to visit their father. There looks to be a colorful cast of characters to meet and some sweet puzzles to solve along the way, all while Tyke revisits the memories of their previous vacations. It all looks really rather wholesome — even if the character models do remind us a little more of Fall Guys than we would have expected — and we can imagine it being just the kind of cozy narrative that...
After an eShop release in 2022, Rogue Legacy 2 will be getting a Limited Run physical release for the Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders for the standard and deluxe edition will open next week on 3rd May 2024. The standard version of the game is estimated to ship at some point in October 2024 and the deluxe edition will roll out in December 2024. The deluxe edition comes with pins, stickers, art cards, sound track and a copy of the game. When this roguelike first arrived on the Switch, we noted how it made the experience "bigger and better" than the first game with a wealth of content, a New Game Plus mode, and much more. The final content update for the game went live in May last year - adding in new subclasses and modes: Would you...
The original Myst is an iconic narrative adventure exploration puzzle game released in 1993. Riven: The Sequel to Myst launched four years later. A remake of Myst came to us in 2020, so it only makes sense that a remake of Riven is delivered (again) four years later. Riven has been shown off in small pieces so far, and today the developer released a new trailer that shows off a good amount of the gameplay. Riven is a love letter to classic narrative-driven puzzle games of the '90s. Players will slowly unravel the many mysteries of the D'ni and Rivenese mythologies. Carefully explore five islands to uncover clues, decipher foreign languages, and become immersed in the lore. The puzzles require profound reflection and examination of the...
Indika is a game quite unlike any other I've seen before and with every new trailer my interest grows deeper. At first glance it is a third-person adventure game with exploration, environmental puzzles, and platforming. Nothing super new about that but it's a good start. But wait, it's about a nun? And she's questioning everything about everything? And the devil is by her side? Every time a trailer drops, a new "and" gets added to my list of reasons to play. Today's trailer adds a new layer to my intrigue, as our protagonist nun asks some difficult ethical questions. Set in Russia at the turn of the 19th century, Indika tells the story of a nun in a world where religious visions clash with harsh reality. Follow a nun (Indika) on a...
Marvel has released a new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer — and it's as over-the-top with swear words and claw-filled action as you'd expect. The trailer finally fully reveals Hugh Jackman reprising his iconic role as Wolverine, this time wearing the fan-favourite yellow and blue costume made famous by the character's design from the X-Men comics. There's plenty of set-up here, with Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool asking a washed-up Wolverine for help. It appears that in this reality, Wolverine has failed spectacularly in some catastrophic way (the X-Men are dead!) and needs a bit of encouragement before going all-in on Deadpool's mission. At various points we see Deadpool and Wolverine fighting each other before working together to fight...
Over the years, we have been blessed with a plethora of amazing RPGs taking inspiration from one another and each (sometimes) being even better than the last, and one RPG that comes to mind is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Despite existing long before The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt arrived on the scene in 2015, this fantasy RPG set in the lands of the Continent helped put Polish developer CD Projekt RED on the map and the studio hasn't looked back ever since. Check out The Witcher 3 next-gen trailer below! Over the years The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would arrive on other platforms including a very impressive port for the Nintendo Switch. It would also receive a gorgeous free new-gen upgrade on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in December...
Somehow, it's been two years since we first heard about the existence of Mafia 4. In May of 2022, it was revealed that Mafia 4 would take the form of a prequel. Codenamed 'Nero', Hangar 13 was reportedly set to develop the game in Unreal Engine 5 as opposed to the studio's own Mafia III engine which was used in the previous instalment. While it's not exactly known what the story will entail, it's assumed that it might follow the rise of the original Mafia's Salieri crime family, potentially taking players from the US to Italy. Hangar 13 and 2K Games are yet to make any major announcements regarding the game but job listings have essentially confirmed its existence. Some reports even claimed that early production had begun on a fifth...
Fallout: London, the upcoming "DLC-sized" mod for Fallout 4, will be delaying its release indefinitely after Bethesda announced Fallout 4's next-gen update will release April 25. Fallout: London, like many Fallout 4 mods, relies on the Fallout 4 Script Extender to work, and the next-gen update is expected to break its functionality. In a new video released over the weekend, project lead Dean Carter says that "the past four years of our work stand to just simply break" with the new update. "It's simply not just the case of blocking the updates and hoping for the best," added Carter. "If you don't do it properly, it'll also break, and we can't just ask you to drag things back in time." Fallout: London was expected to release April 23...

Launching next week is Sand Land, the action-adventure game based on Akira Toriyama's work of the same name. In anticipation of the launch, developer Bandai Namco has aired a new trailer which is fittingly set to the rhythm of the Eurodance song Sandstorm by Darude. Sand Land is set to release on April 26 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Legacyquels to '80s movies are all the rage lately. Despite decades passing since they first hit theaters, franchises like Top Gun and Ghostbusters are getting a new lease on life thanks to large-scale blockbusters that continue the story and capitalize on the nostalgia for their first installments. While this formula usually works for action-packed, crowd-pleasing adventures, 2024's Beetlejuice sequel, aptly titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is more of a gamble. Ahead of its September 5th release, we now have our first look at Tim Burton's take on the afterlife, and it proves the original movie's self-aware tone hasn't gone anywhere. Check out the full teaser below. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice follows three generations of Deetz women...
