Update [Thu 14th Nov, 2024 16:35 GMT]: As part of its Zuntata Night 2024 November issue livestream, which took place earlier today, Taito and M2 have shared the first few images from Night Striker Gear, which was being described at the event as "a completely new work".
The images show three new stages called "City 1", "Sky 2", and "Sewer 2", and offer a look at some of the fancy environmental lighting effects that have been added to the title, as well as the revised UI that now features an additional element representing the player's Gear level. You can take a look at the new images below:

As well as providing our first look at the new game, M2 and Taito also revealed that the game will be launching on PC...
Over the years, there have been quite a few fanmade conversions of Nintendo's classic arcade game Donkey Kong for the ZX Spectrum, as well as an official version from Ocean Software released in 1986.
But earlier this week, a new port was dropped from the homebrew developer Artonapilos and the producer Bubu Marcianito that could potentially be the best version yet (thanks IndieRetroNews for the spot!).
The new version of the game features characters that are significantly closer to the designs seen in the arcade original (especially when compared to Ocean's effort) and is much more colourful than many of the previous versions we've seen. It also doesn't seem to be much of a slouch when it comes to its performance either, with the game...
When Nintendo launched Super Mario Kart, it kicked off a trend of placing mascots in four-wheeled vehicles, which, you could argue, still exists today.
While Mario has always felt at home in a kart (and has now sold millions of copies doing just that), other kart-based efforts have fluctuated between "good" (Crash Team Racing, Sonic and All-Star Racing) to "pretty uninspired" (too many examples to mention, if we're honest).
There's a definite feeling that, despite Mario and Sonic's success behind the wheel, when a mascot gets placed in a racing game, the company behind the move has run out of ideas.
It's unusual, then, to learn that WipEout (which is a racing game already, lest we forget) was very nearly reimagined as a kart-based...
Embracer Group has released its interim report for the period July to September 2024, and it hasn't taken long for fans to spot something unusual under the section "Announced PC/Console Releases as of November 14, 2024": an upcoming game from Clear River Games based on the Jaleco arcade title Formation Z.
The find was brought to our attention earlier this week via one of our readers James Henderson, who rightfully pointed out that Clear River Games hasn't seemed to have announced any Formation Z game either on social media or on its website, despite what the report is claiming. And it has had us wondering exactly what this game could be.
Over the last few years, City Connection (the owners of the Formation Z IP) has announced two...
Update [Thu 14th Nov, 2024 12:35 GMT]: Boogermann has now released his MSX core for the Analogue Pocket.
According to the info shared on GitHub, the core currently supports MSX 1 cartridge ROM files, but Boogermann also has plans to implement floppy disk and cassette support, as well as an on-screen keyboard in the future, with the developer hoping to make further changes in the future.
Original Article [Sat 24th Feb, 2024 19:20 GMT]: FPGA developer Boogermann has revealed he is about to release an MSX core for the Analogue Pocket.
Created in 1983 as a standardized home computer architecture, MSX was a joint venture between ASCII Corporation and Microsoft.
The plan was to create the format and then allow other companies to produce...
If you're a Blizzard fan, you may remember the Warcraft Battle Chest. Released in 1996, the big box collection included 3 CDs (containing Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, and the Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal expansion), and allowed players to purchase the lot for a slightly reduced price, inevitably paving the way for it to go on to become a best seller.
Well, yesterday, Blizzard announced that it was releasing an all-new digital version of the classic '90s collection to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Warcraft I, featuring fresh remasters of the first two Warcraft titles. And better yet, it's available to buy now from Battle Net for PC (priced at £34.99).
The collection not only features the new...
The publisher Songbird Productions and developer Eclipse Software are teaming up to deliver a brand new Atari Jaguar port of the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga shoot 'em up Wings of Death.
Wings of Death was first released by Eclipse Software for the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga back in 1990 and was published at the time by Thalion Software. It is a vertically scrolling shooter that puts players in control of a wizard who has been transformed into an insect by an evil witch.
The goal of the game is to guide the mage in its transformed state through various levels, with the player being able to upgrade their powers and transform into various other forms, including an eagle, dragon, and griffin, on their way to restoring their humanity...
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake launches worldwide today across all major console formats, and while it's been met with an enthusiastic reception from fans, it's unlikely that its release will trigger the same scenes which accompanied the launch of the original Famicom version in Japan.
The game hit store shelves on February 10th, 1988, and racked up a staggering 1.1 million sales in a single day. By the end of the week, it had sold 3 million units and would remain at the top of the Japanese sales charts until April, going on to become Japan's best-selling game of 1988.
The incredible scenes of thousands of Japanese punters queuing to purchase a copy probably won't be seen again, especially as we live in an era where you can simply...
Originally launching on the PS2 in 2004 and since exploding in popularity in Japan with the portable PSP releases, and globally with the release of World, Monster Hunter stands as a one of Capcom's best-selling series. With much anticipation for the latest entry, Monster Hunter Wilds, launching early next year, fans have been somewhat blindsided by the unceremonious reveal of an entirely new and different title. And it's a mobile game.
Monster Hunter isn't new to mobile games, with the Pokemon Go-style Monster Hunter Now having seen more than 15 million downloads since it launched last year. Outlanders is something of a different beast however, promising to be a "traditional hunting experience" available on your phone. In the press...
Yesterday, Antstream added five PS1 Net Yaroze titles to its Antstream Arcade service, including Time Slip, Pushy IIb, Bouncer 2, Adventure Game, and Arena.
Net Yaroze, in case you've never heard of it, was a development kit released by Sony in 1996 in Japan (and in 1997 in other countries) that allowed groups of hobbyist game developers the chance to create their own video games for the Sony PlayStation, by taking advantage of a set of relatively inexpensive and easy-to-use tools.
Following its launch, it cultivated an impressive community of like-minded individuals — many of whom took to sharing their creations online on forums and through magazine demo discs — but has since faded into obscurity in the decades since, with several of...
Today, digital storefront GOG has announced the GOG Preservation Program as a continuation of its committment to preserve and restore classic video games. With this new initiative, GOG is ensuring that games remain compatible with modern systems. The company is committing its own resources to maintaining their compatibility with modern systems.
Classic games that have been improved by GOG in this way now have an official stamp on the storefront. There are currently 100 of them, including the Resident Evil series and, released today, Heroes of Might and Magic 3: Complete and Dungeon Keeper 2.

Taito has announced that M2 is currently working on a new follow-up to the 3D arcade shoot 'em up Night Striker.
Released in 1989, the original Night Striker saw players step behind the wheel of a futuristic armored vehicle, with the ultimate aim being to take down an evil terrorist organisation and rescue a kidnapped scientist and his daughter. At the time, it took advantage of Taito's Z System arcade hardware and featured 2D sprite scaling, similar to that seen in Sega's Super Scaler games Space Harrier and After Burner, to give players the impression of a 3D world.
Console ports were later released for the Sega Mega CD (1993), Sony PlayStation (1995), and Sega Saturn (1996), with all three of these being exclusively released in...
Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert has said in the past that the series owes a debt to Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride and Tim Powers' book, On Stranger Tides – but an eagle-eyed fan has spotted another piece of media which shares some interesting similarities with the point-and-click classic.
As highlighted by @blackhawkadvent, the 1951 film Double Crossbones also features a young rookie pirate, as well as a few sequences that will seem very familiar to fans of Gilbert's first Monkey Island adventure.
For example, in one scene, protagonist and apprentice shopkeeper Davey Crandall (Donald O'Connor) enters a tavern full of pirates with the objective of becoming one after he is falsely accused of being involved in the sale of...
Update [Wed 13th Nov, 2024 12:30 GMT]: Retro-Bit has announced on social media that it is postponing pre-orders for its upcoming Toaplan Shooters Collection 2, due to "an issue with one of the featured games".
In the statement given, Retro-Bit didn't share any details about which specific game was the cause of this issue but later clarified that all three games from the set have been postponed as a result of the problem. It is encouraging those who want a refund to get in contact with the retailer they placed pre-orders with and has stated that they will be sharing more details on the games once they get the undisclosed issue sorted out.
Here's the statement in full:
Something that is probably worth bringing up is that this is the...
The folks behind Arcade Archives have announced that the next Konami classic that it will be bringing to Nintendo Switch and PS4 will be Konami's Ping Pong (thanks Famitsu!).
The game will be released on November 14th in Japan and is expected to roll out across some digital storefronts in the West shortly after.
Originally released in arcades in 1985, Konami's Ping Pong is — as you probably guessed — a take on the popular sport of table tennis, with players being able to compete in both single-player and multiplayer matches. The winner is the first to reach 11 points (or higher if you're not leading by two points), with players having a few basic moves at their fingertips to help them get an edge on their opponent, including a...
Ports of Shining Force Chronicle I, II and III for Android devices have been preserved by fans, we're happy to report (thanks, RockmanCosmo).
The games are based on the Game Gear Shining Force Gaiden series of titles and were originally released on "keitai" phones in Japan before being ported to Android.
The first of the series launched in 2005, and the Android ports commenced in 2011. The Android versions could only be obtained through the PuyoSega subscription service.
The games were all removed from distribution some time ago, but Yeetdom101 has managed to recover the APK files and usernameak has removed the DRM that would ordinarily prevent the games from loading up.
They're all in Japanese, of course, but it's still cool that...

A popular belief claims the SNES had better sound hardware than its competitor, the Genesis / Mega Drive. On paper, this seems true.
Nintendo's Sony-made sound chip can create amazing music and effects, while the Genesis' Yamaha YM2612 uses a more '80s-style FM sound. Both have pros and cons, but the usual story is that Sega's console came second in this area.
Well-known modder and homebrew coder @GabrielPyron recently challenged this view on social media. He pointed to @VTRCHIPMUSIC's impressive YM2612 version of the famous Super Castlevania IV song, Simon's Theme.
This track – and others by VTRCHIPMUSIC – will be in the upcoming (unofficial) Genesis port of the game, called Mega Castlevania IV. You can hear more of the music...
