Bandai's Tamagotchi virtual pet is seeing another rise in popularity, with its first UK store opening up in London's fashionable Camden market.
The brand became one of the hottest-selling items of the '90s and was relaunched in 2019. The BBC reports that global sales more than doubled between 2022 and 2023.
While your typical Tamagotchi retains the same basic design, the device has come a long way since it launched in 1996.
"Now you can connect with friends, you can play on Wi-Fi and download different items, and that's really combating that sense of fatigue that you might have gotten with some earlier models," Tamagotchi brand manager Priya Jadeja told the BBC. "When we relaunched, we thought it would be a very millennial-focused...

Sega is offering a salary of $100,000 and $130,000 a year for an "Archivist" role within the company, focusing mainly on documenting Sonic's history.
"SEGA. . . What do you think of when you hear that word?" states the job listing. "Do you think of the console with the iconic, harmonized voice fire ups or do you think of the countless gaming hits from Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, or the Persona series?"
Based in Burbank, California, the role will report directly to the Senior Director of Lore and Creative Strategy within the Transmedia West Team. The successful applicant will be "critical to the preservation of Sonic lore, canon, characters, and universes, helping to bring consistency, connectivity, and creativity to all things...
When a yakuza legend loses his memory, what does he do?
He becomes a pirate, of course! It may not be such a realistic path, but it makes sense when you think of how much the two careers have in common. Goro Majima is a notorious ex-yakuza who finds himself shipwrecked on a sparsely-populated Pacific island six months after teaming up with Kiryu for a massive battle in the Millennium Tower. He has the bits of a boat with him, but absolutely no memory of who he is or what he's done. Helped by the young islander who saved him, Majima begins a search for clues to his past — not expecting the powder-keg world that awaits.
Majima and the boy, Noah, end up involved in a conflict between cutthroat criminals, modern-day pirates, and other...
PS5 scene developer Specter has released their PS5 jailbreak that currently targets 2.x version firmwares and lower. The jailbreak dubbed UMTX is based on a webkit kernel exploit and allows users to unlock specific features of their PlayStation 5 console.
There are plans to port the jailbreak to higher firmware versions up to 6.x but due to the additional security measures this could take a considerable amount of time. Unfortuantely for those consoles on 6.x and 7.x firmware versions this webkit exploit has been patched but potential blu-ray related exploits are being considered.
The UMTX jailbreak allows users to unlock the PS5 debug menu and even provides users an entry point to inject small (limited) payloads such as a basic Hello...
AI is the flavor of the month in the tech world, with practically everybody in the consumer electronics industry trying to shoehorn the buzzword into their product or service.
We're also seeing AI infiltrate the world of game development, with companies like EA stating that it's a big part of their strategy.
Generative AI video software has also become incredibly popular, and we're now seeing it used as a means of "updating" classic video games.
Check out this example of Shenmue, run through "Gen-3 vid2vid":
Some people would have you believe this is the future of video games:
"If we manage to use the technology live in games without performance loss, that would be a huge step forward," argues @kimmonismus. "RayTracing could be...
Sony recently caused a stir by announcing a range of PS1-style designs for its console range to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand.
The series includes the PS5, PS Portal and the new PS5 Pro, all clad in the iconic grey color scheme and sporting the classic multicolour PS logo.
MiSTer Pi creator Taki Udon has taken this opportunity to tease a PS-related project of his own – an FPGA-based system which takes design inspiration from the original 32-bit PlayStation and runs games as accurately as possible.
FPGA chips – which stands for "Field-Programmable Gate Array" – allow developers to replicate the performance of classic systems on a hardware level rather than using software, as is the case with traditional...
Streaming platform Antstream Arcade recently launched on PS4 and PS5, bringing with it over 1300 vintage games to play via a subscription.
There are already a selection of PS1 titles available on the service, but studio head Mike Rouse (who also runs the Retro Gamer Boy YouTube channel) has revealed that many more are on the way.
Speaking to GameRant, Rouse said:
According to GameRant, Rouse says Antstream is also looking at adding more recent systems to its service, with PS2 and GameCube being referenced specifically.
In case you weren't aware, Antstream uses cloud technology to stream games to a wide range of devices, including consoles, phones and computers.
Famitsu has announced its data for estimated physical software sales from September 9th, 2024 to September 15th, 2024 for Japan, revealing that G-Mode's Hokkaido Serial Murder Case: The Okhotsk Disappearance ~Memories in Ice, Tearful Figurine~ for Nintendo Switch has managed to nab the top spot for the week.
The remake of Yuji Horii's 1984 Famicom ADV classic was released worldwide earlier this month across Nintendo Switch & Steam and has since gone on to sell 20,919 retail copies, according to Famitsu's estimations. This puts it ahead of popular titles like Astro Bot (in second place), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (in third), and Nintendo Switch Sports (in fourth).
It's an encouraging start for the game, which has likely benefitted from a...
Sega's Japanese account has announced on Twitter that a new project based on its RPG series Rent-A-Hero is currently in development and scheduled for release next year.
But before you go getting too excited, it appears that the new game won't be a traditional follow-up, as many would hope. Instead, it is being developed in partnership with the Korean developer LINE NEXT as part of its NFT ecosystem. So, in other words, expect a bunch of Web3 nonsense that almost nobody wanted.
The new project, which is being called Rent-A-Hero Z, will based on the action RPG "Rent-A-Hero, which was first released as a Japan-exclusive for the Sega Mega Drive in 1991, before receiving an enhanced remake for the Sega Dreamcast called Rent-A-Hero No.1...
Earlier this month, we shared the news with you that Jada Toys was adding Deejay and Cammy to its Ultra Street Fighter II range of toys, and now it seems there's another new challenger on the horizon with the announcement that Guile will also be joining them.
The Guile action figure, similar to the rest of the toys in the current range, is 1/12 in scale and measures 6 inches (12cm) tall. It features multiple points of articulation and will also come with interchangeable parts including another head with a gritted teeth expression, another pair of hands, and a comb for posing, as well as a Sonic Boom effect. All of this will be delivered in stylish collectible packaging, designed to look like a Street Fighter II arcade cabinet...

And you'll have to make them all happy when you create your own museum in Two Point Museum, the third game to take place in Two Point County. Announced last month, the management sim has you curating exhibits, coordinating experts, marketing, and managing the entire museum including its staff. Today, it was announced that Two Point Museum will be released in March 2025. There's also some new information about pre-order bonuses and the two digital editions of the game.
Beginning as a fledgling curator, you will design and refine your museum to create a great guest experience. Create thematic areas before...
Announced less than a month ago at Nintendo's Indie World Showcase, the next paid DLC pack for PowerWash Simulator is a trek into the land of Shrek. PowerWash Simulator is a chill game about, well, powerwashing. Clean anything from an old-timey bicycle to an entire pyramid (inside and out). In this DLC, you'll clean five levels of colourful cartoony Shrek fun. There is also a new powerwasher, seen in this trailer, and presumably a new outfit and gloves based on what has been included with past DLC. As you work, you'll receive messages from some familiar folks. Today, FuturLab and Square Enix Collective announced an October launch date for the Shrek Special Pack.
PowerWash Simulator is no stranger to collaborative DLC and has already...
Lord Alan Sugar has announced that he's planning to create an online museum dedicated to the Amstrad brand and has asked fans to contribute their memories.
"I am putting together an Amstrad 'museum' website," says Sugar on social media. "If you have any great memories or anecdotes about Amstrad products you've owned over the years, tweet them to me with a picture and I might include them on the website. Please include the hashtag #Amstrad."
Amstrad was founded in 1968 when Sugar was 21, with the name being an adaption of Alan Michael Sugar Trading Limited. The company's focus in the early years was on consumer electronics such as hi-fi systems, TVs and car stereos, all manufactured in the Far East and rebadged for the UK market.

The SuperSega FPGA project has people excited and sceptical at the same time.
A bold venture which aims to produce a system capable of playing Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast and Sega CD games, it will leverage cutting-edge FPGA technology to emulate these platforms on a hardware level – so, in theory, it will be just like playing on the real thing, with zero lag and no emulation issues.
Since the project was announced, it has been branded as vaporware by some members of the retro gaming community, and until a real unit is shown working, that stance isn't like to soften.
However, the team behind SuperSega has been in touch with us to propose a live interview to address concerns over core development, release timings...
Back in 2022, there were rumors of a remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn, Guerilla's first game in the Horizon franchise. However, this was not confirmed by Sony nor the developer but new developments appear to add credibility to those rumors. More specifically, the ESRB has provided a recent 'Teen' rating for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for PS5 and PC, with the following summary:
While no release date has been provided, nor has the title been confirmed by Sony, a remaster does follow the company's recent trend of its first-party games. In particular, this rating coincides with the recent PS5 Pro announcement and the game might accompany the console's launch.

When Palworld released into early access back in January of this year, it drew attention for its similarities to Pokemon. Some called into question whether or not the developers of Palword, Pocketpair Inc, would come under fire, but The Pokemon Company issued an official statement that they had no plans at the time to pursue legal action, and would need to, "investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon."
It appears that the investigation from The Pokemon Company has led to the decision of indeed filing a lawsuit against Pocketpair Inc, claiming that Palworld infringes on "multiple patent rights". Nintendo is seeking an injunction and compensation for...
Capcom's excellent Marvel-related fighting games are back in the spotlight thanks to the welcome release of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, and Atsushi "Tomichin" Tomita – who worked as a planner on many of those titles – has taken to social media to talk about how the first 'vs' game (X-Men vs. Street Fighter) came to be.
Tomita reveals that within Capcom, there was some initial resistance to the idea of mixing Marvel characters with the world of Street Fighter, as neither X-Men: Children of the Atom nor Marvel Super Heroes were commercial hits in Japan, despite being popular in North America.
Tomita reveals that X-Men vs. Street Fighter was very nearly called X-Men 2, but when the choice was made to introduce...
