A new Nintendo Switch firmware update just landed. System software version 18.1.0 has been released and pushed out to consoles. The contents of the update are fairly minor, to the point of this firmware being a "rebootless" one, meaning the Switch doesn't even need to reboot in order to apply the new changes. According to known scene dataminers, it appears as though the new firmware exists only to add a handful of Japanese phrases to the system's "bad words list". Source
For a year now, I've been struggling to keep myself from subscribing to Apple Arcade to play Hello Kitty Island Adventure; subbing for a single game is ridiculous, or so I keep telling myself. But it seems as though I've successfully waited it out, as the open world adventure game featuring lots of fan-favorite Sanrio characters will be released for PC and as a timed console exclusive for Nintendo Switch during 2025. It will launch later for PlayStation, but there's been no mention of a version for any Xbox console. The timed console exclusive announcement was made during today's Nintendo Direct. Hello Kitty Island Adventure first launched as an Apple Arcade exclusive nearly a year ago, during July 2023. It was nominated for Best...
A Legend of Zelda game… actually starring the titular character in the main role?! It really should not have taken this long for a mainline title in The Legend of Zelda series to actually put Princess Zelda at the front and centre, but it finally happens in action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. And it is super cute to boot! Zelda's time in the spotlight begins on Nintendo Switch this September. The game was announced during today's Nintendo Direct. The first game in The Legend of Zelda series launched back in the mid-80s and since there there have been over a dozen games in the main series alone (and so many more spin-offs). They all revolve around Link and Zelda. Link is brave, sure, but is he really that much...
PLAYISM and WSS Playground have announced that the upcoming pixel art Metroidvania title Blade Chimera will be launching on the Switch this coming August. While they stopped short of confirming the exact date, it at least gives us an idea of when we can dive in. And goodness, it looks stunning, right? The latest trailer showcases more of the game's combat, which includes both melee and ranged abilities, along with unique traversal mechanics. The game is being developed by Team Ladybug, who has previously worked on titles such as Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth and Touhou Luna Nights, with a particularly strong ability to create gorgeous pixel art sprites. Let's remind ourselves of the official synopsis: As...
Rabbit & Bears Studios, the team behind the Suikoden spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, has shared a look at the new JRPG's DLC roadmap. If the team manages to stay on schedule, all three add-ons should arrive this year. The first half of this roadmap showcases items already available including The Hope of the Alliance, Pioneer Pack, & HQ Makeover Pack. As for the second part of this roadmap, it features three extra stories. Marisa's story is set to arrive in August 2024, Seign's will follow in September 2024 and the third one will be released in October 2024. Although the Switch version of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes didn't get off to the best start, the team has previously issued a statement mentioning...
Compile's classic '80s action RPG Golvellius has just been released on the Nintendo Switch. Published in 1987 for the original MSX under the title Maou Golvellius, the game would later be remade for the more powerful MSX2+ as Shin Maou Golvellius in 1988 – that's the version we're getting here. In the same year, Sega licensed the game for release on its 8-bit Master System home console; Western players are likely to be the most familiar with that version. "Released in 1988 by COMPILE for the MSX2 in Japan, this action RPG is an enhanced version of "Golvellius" which was released for the MSX the previous year," reads the game's page on Nintendo's site. "In this game, players take on the role of the knight Kelesis, who embarks on an...
It has been confirmed that Hokkaido Rensa Satsujin: Ohotsuku ni Kiyu will have English language support when it launches on Switch and Steam on September 12th in Japan (thanks, Gematsu). It will also offer Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese language options, and the Switch physical edition will cost 8,800 yen. "Hokkaido Rensa Satsujin: Ohotsuku ni Kiyu is a detective adventure game released for PC by LOGiN SOFT in 1984, then for Famicom in 1987," reads the PR. "It is considered to be the third game in the "Yuji Horii Mystery Trilogy" following The Portopia Serial Murder Case and Karuizawa Yuukai Annai." Here's the list of staff working on this one: Original Creator and New Scenario SupervisionYuji Horii (Dragon Quest series...
Nintendo updated its Switch Online service this week to include three 1989 Game Boy games – Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Baseball – but in Japan, an extra game was added to the service. Action-adventure title Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (The Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls) was developed by Nintendo R&D1 and Intelligent Systems, and hit Japanese store shelves in 1992. The story involves Prince Richard of the Custard Kingdom and the Prince of the Sablé Kingdom, who are friendly rivals at the start of the adventure. When Princess Tiramisu of the Mille-Feuille Kingdom gets captured by the malevolent King Delarin, Richard sets off to rescue her in order to claim bragging rights over the Prince of Sablé – who predictably accepts the...
We're fast approaching the release of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for the Switch, and in the leadup to this release, Nintendo's New York store in America has announced a special launch event. Between 11 am and 2pm on May 25th, 2024, fans will be able to celebrate the game's launch. There'll even be a special appearance (yes, it's Mario). Nintendo's mascot will also be appearing at the store on launch day. Here's the full rundown, via the official announcement on social media: Ahead of the game's launch on the 23rd, Nintendo has been sharing all sorts of footage including some new trailers. One of the latest clips shows off the "Partner Ring" - allowing you to quickly cycle through partners and access certain abilities...
Dear Villagers has announced that the cosy, accessible city builder Fabledom — which launched on Steam today — is also coming to Nintendo Switch later this year. Grenaa Games' debut title will also be getting a physical version alongside the eShop release. Taking the popular city builder genre and giving it a fairy tale twist, Fabledom sees you creating the perfect kingdom for you and your subjects. Inspired by The Settlers, Foundation, and Kingdoms and Castles, Fabledom aims to deliver a laid-back take on managing, building, and expanding your town. Flying pigs, gnomes, and the ever-present threat of a dragon are just a few things you might encounter on your search for the Promised Land. Plus, this isn't just about building a city...

Hamster has revealed that the next Namco game coming to Arcade Archives will be the vertical shoot-em-up F/A (otherwise known as Fighter & Attacker). The announcement was made during today's livestream on Hamster's YouTube channel (1:41:36), with the game being planned to start distribution across both PS4 and Nintendo Switch on May 15th. Fighter & Attacker was originally released on Namco's NA-1 hardware in the arcades back in 1992 and is notable in that it has so far never been ported or reissued on consoles. As gosokkyu notes, it also features a fairly memorable techno-inspired score, which comes courtesy of the legendary Namco composers Takayuki Aihara (Ridge Racer 2, Street Fighter EX) and Shinji Hosoe (Ridge Racer, Street...
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is getting yet another update on Switch later this month, bringing new modes to the game along with a number of cosmetics for protagonist Miriam. Announced via a blog post, the information provided is described as the 'final development roadmap' for the game after its Switch launch in 2019. The new update will officially go live on 16th May, 2024 at 8am PDT / 4pm BST / 5pm CEST and is undoubtedly a hefty one for fans of the Metroidvania. The highlights include two new modes: Chaos Mode and Versus Mode. The former will allow you and a friend to join forces via local or online play to defeat enemies and bosses across randomised rooms. Upgrades will be provided after each boss encounter, with the goal...
Developer C2 Game Studio and publishers Versus Evil and tinyBuild have today announced that the newly retitled Astor: Blade of the Monolith (formally Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients) will be bringing the fantasy fight to Switch on 30th May. In this action RPG, you will play as a lone hero (honestly, is there any other kind?) making your way across a desolate landscape in the hopes of solving the mystery of his creators' disappearances. If it sounds very action-RPGy, that's because it is. The developer has cited the likes of Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and The Legend of Zelda as points of inspiration for Astor's creative combat and fantasy world — both of which look rather nice in the new trailer (above). You'll be wielding ancient...
After an eShop release in 2022, Rogue Legacy 2 will be getting a Limited Run physical release for the Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders for the standard and deluxe edition will open next week on 3rd May 2024. The standard version of the game is estimated to ship at some point in October 2024 and the deluxe edition will roll out in December 2024. The deluxe edition comes with pins, stickers, art cards, sound track and a copy of the game. When this roguelike first arrived on the Switch, we noted how it made the experience "bigger and better" than the first game with a wealth of content, a New Game Plus mode, and much more. The final content update for the game went live in May last year - adding in new subclasses and modes: Would you...
Following a joke earlier this month, WayForward has now announced Double Dragon DLC for its side-scrolling beat 'em up River City Girls 2. Yes, the "legendary" BIlly and Jimmy Lee will be making a return as playable characters in "premium DLC" this summer. According to the PR, a free update will also be made available to all River City Girls 2 owners at the same time - adding a new Double Dragon-themed motion comic, two new shops, new accessories, and "more". Here's some extra information about these characters and what you can expect from them in River City Girls 2:
If you are a fan of Inti Creates or simply want to catch up on some of its game releases, you might want to read on... The game company has announced the Inti Creates Gold Archive Collection for the Nintendo Switch. It's a physical package featuring Mighty Gunvolt, Mighty Gunvolt Burst, and PuzzMiX on a single game cartridge. Mighty Gunvolt will be an "all-new port" and Burst comes with all the DLC. Unfortunately, this Gold collection has only been confirmed for Japan right now. It will launch in this region on 20th August 2024. There will also be a limited edition version which includes soundtracks for Mighty Gunvolt Burst and PuzzMiX. Here's the PR about each title (via Gematsu): Mighty Gunvolt Mighty Gunvolt Burst PuzzMiX
The previews have officially gone live for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and it seems we've now got a better idea about the performance. In case you missed our 'hands on' here on GameParadise, the upcoming Switch release runs great across both handheld and docked. As for frame rate, it appears to be 30fps - so it could take some time to adjust to if you played the original on GameCube. Here's exactly what we had to say: According to Nintendo's official description, the Switch version of Thousand-Year Door comes with "revamped graphics", which might explain the changes in performance. This newer release also includes an updated soundtrack, gameplay additions, and some additional improvements (which you can learn more about in...
Bandai Namco has today revealed that the anime and manga series That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime will be heading to Switch as a side-scrolling RPG on 8th August. The catchily titled That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles will mark the first game adaptation of the series and it promises to hit many of the same story beats as its source material including Rimuru Tempest and co.'s encounters with the Kijin, battles against Falmuth and many more. But that's not to say that this will all be familiar territory for fans of the series, as the game will also contain new storylines and characters from the OG author Fuse. This action RPG looks to be all about flashy combo-focused combat, but from the reveal trailer...
Nintendo fans everywhere, we are blessed this fine day with not one but two classic games available to download right now. Yes, you read that right: Nintendo Switch users are being treated to a wonderfully nostalgic trip back in time with two surprise drops on the Nintendo Online + Expansion Pack. Both titles hail back to the 90s; Extreme-G was released in 1997, and Iggy's Reckin' Balls came out in 1998. What a time to be alive! If you're too young to remember these retro delights, fear not, for you can now access them just as if you had whipped out that bad boy N64 your folks talk about so much. You might look at the blocky graphics and wonder if anyone is hyped about this surprise announcement, and to that we say – yes, yes they...
