ScarlettVixen has just released Mario Adventure 3, an ambitious Super Mario Bros. 3 ROM hack which is 20 years in the making. "It's been an extremely long project, but after 12 years, it's finally here," says the developer. "Many of this game's elements are iterations and polishes on concepts found in prior projects. Mario Adventure 3 is more than a 12 year project, it's a 20 year amalgamation of ideas waiting to see fruition." Mario Adventure launched in 2002 and, since then, has been iterated upon with other hacks, including Luigi's Coin Quest and Luigi vs. Mario. Mario Adventure 3 takes many of the concepts found in these previous games and augments and enhances them. Some of the new features included in the game are: Day and...
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is a game that's only become more beloved over time. Being remastered for the Wii U in 2013, fans have eagerly awaited the game's release on the more accessible Switch. 11 years later those same fans are still waiting, some still holding off replaying this classic tale in hopes of keeping the experience fresh if and when Nintendo finally pull the trigger. If you happen to find yourself in that niche lion-headed boat, it's time to set down your Wind Waker and turn your attention to something I frankly can't believe exists. "The Legend of Goose: The Honk Waker" is a colossal ROM hack more than four years in the making. Starting out as a simple mod to swap out Link's model for the GameCube game's...
A new hack has just been released online that introduces the Star Fox 2 characters Miyu and Fay to the original Star Fox. Miyu and Fay, in case you are unaware, are the two brand new recruits that joined the Star Fox team in the cancelled follow-up to Star Fox (which was eventually released via the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017). They resemble a lynx and a poodle respectively, and have since become popular characters among members of the fanbase despite having only ever appeared in a single game. The new hack, therefore, seeks to give players more time with the Star Fox recruits, incorporating them into the original game with fresh dialogue being added and existing cutscenes being edited to make this as natural as possible...
20 years ago we saw what is to many the peak of the Pokemon series. Pokemon Emerald released as a definitive version of the series' third generation, combining the storylines of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire before it, and adding a post-game battle area the extent of which hasn't been seen since. If like me you still go back to the game once every few months, you might be on the lookout for a simple way to keep the experience feeling fresh and new. Today, posted on The Ultra Nerd's Twitter account, a collaborative respriting hack for Pokemon Emerald was released in celebration of the game's 20th anniversary. Emerald ReSprited features the work of 130 artists to give every one of the game's Pokemon sprites a makeover. There's a huge range...
When it comes to Pokemon spin-offs, none are more beloved than the Mystery Dungeon games. Bringing monster collection and the charm of the larger series to the random environments and natural replayability of Mystery Dungeon titles, Spike Chunsoft hit it out of the gate with the debut games Red and Blue Rescue Team. Having recently revisited those titles in 2020 with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, fans of the series have been patiently waiting for the next game to get the same series. Four years later they're still waiting. Explorers of Sky, the enhanced version of Explorers of Time and Darkness before it, is renowned as the peak of the series in terms of both content and storytelling. For those wanting to re-experience this...
Yesterday, the ROM Hacker BillyTime!Games released a promising new fan patch for Accolade's 1994 Mega Drive / Genesis vehicular combat game Combat Cars, which aims to remove some of the frustrations from the challenging Micro Machines-Esque racer. Combat Cars, in case you've never played it, sees players selecting from one of 8 racers, with each of these individuals having their own special weapon that they can use against their enemies across the game's 24 courses. At the time of its release, it received some pretty average reviews from outlets like Computer and Video Games, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and Mean Machines Sega, with publications generally praising its music and its multiplayer mode while criticizing "its slidey control...
A new ROM hack that represents "nearly three years" of work has just been released for Super Mario World, giving players a challenging new adventure to play through. Simpatico is the result of a collaboration between the hackers BigRedBoy and RealBChin (with additional help from Stivi) and follows Mario's brother Luigi as he sets off on an adventure with his arch-rival Waluigi in tow. In the hack, players will travel across a colorful overworld hopping from level to level (with 27 exits in total), with the overall objective of each stage being to solve a bunch of puzzles and then lure Waluigi through various obstacles without him being able to touch Luigi. This requires a ton of precise movements from the player, as Waluigi will not...
If you've been looking for an excuse to revisit Streets of Rage 2, then today's your lucky day. The prolific ROM hacker and "retro mad scientist" BillyTime!Games has just released a brand new IPS patch for the classic 1992 sidescrolling beat 'em up, which adds a simple levelling system to the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis game to mix things up a bit. With the patch installed, players will start out as normal with the typical amount of strength and the exact same resistance to damage but will then be able to gain a new level every 100,000 points to raise these attributes further. Each successive level increases the player's strength and resistance by one, with these bonuses lasting until they run out of lives. It's an interesting...
A popular hack of Pokemon Emerald utilising the public decompilation project, Pokemon Elite Redux has just had its 2.1 update go live this week. For those who haven't heard of Elite Redux before, it's a hack that takes the base Pokemon Emerald experience and completely revamps it with a competitive focus. With training your Pokemon and swapping moves now being quick and easy to do within the game's menus, you're given the tools to plan and prepare for each of the game's challenges. And believe me, there are some real challenges. Each Pokemon also has three "innate" abilities alongside their standard ability, providing even more chances for interesting team building and synergy. On my current scaled nuzlocke randomizer run, this...

A new website has just been launched for Super Mario Bros. ROM hacking online. The site, which is called SMB Arena, is the work of the Super Mario Bros. ROM hacker StudsX (with help from fellow hackers Eden GT and Hellfire), and aims to "create a portal where SMB1 enjoyers can find up-to-date tools, documents, [and] hacks" It is currently home to over 3500+ hacks, which Eden GT successfully archived over the past decade, and also includes the ability for verified users to upload their own original hacks as well, for others to try out. The launch of the site comes just three weeks after it was announced that the leading ROM Hacking community ROMHacking.Net would be winding down after 20 years, causing many to seek out alternatives...
The retro gaming "mad scientist" BillyTime!Games has released his latest Mega Drive / Genesis ROM hack and this time he is focusing on giving an exciting overhaul to the beloved action "roguelike" classic Toejam & Earl. Originally released in 1991, Toejam & Earl sees up to two players taking control of a pair of alien rappers who have crash landed on a bunch of floating islands representing Earth. Players have to travel from one island to the next via special elevators, with the ultimate goal of the game being to collect all the pieces of wreckage from their ship and make their escape. This will involve avoiding a bunch of bizarre enemies, like possessed mailboxes, angry hamsters, and ice cream trucks, as well as occasionally picking...
A new fan patch has just been released for the Mega Drive / Genesis Jurassic Park Rampage Edition, introducing a bunch of new endings to the game, as well as various quality-of-life improvements to rebalance the overall experience. The patch, which is called Jurassic Park Volcanic Edition, is the work of the ROM hacker BillyTime!Games, whose previous efforts include ROM hacks of games like Ghostbusters, Kid Chameleon, and Batman Revenge of the Joker, as well as the creation of the Sega Channel Revival Project, to name just a few. Jurassic Park Rampage Edition, meanwhile, is a sidescrolling platformer from the developer BlueSky Software and publisher Sega that was originally released in 1994. It is the second Jurassic Park game from...
Romhacking has many facets, from unofficial translations of games released in only one region, new levels and/or character modifications, to quality of life improvements to the original titles, amongst many, many other types of romhacks as a whole. Some intuitive romhackers see the tools and knowledge to make entirely new stories out of the original games as a base, sometimes creating a new scenario of said game in a brand new light and tone. This is the case for one such project from the talented romhacker and modder BigSharkZ, who worked on an entirely new story based on a "what if" scenario if EarthBound had a bad ending of sorts. The original project was showcased in a video named "BuzzBound: Cursed EarthBound Prequel" from July...
When we were playing Donkey Kong Country in the early '90s, we never expected there would come a day when we would be able to play the game as Mario. But now, thanks to a hacker named RainbowSprinklez, it's finally possible to play as the iconic moustachioed plumber (specifically the version of Mario from Super Mario World), to see how he would fare against King K. Rool and his army of Kremlings (thanks CM30 for the spot!). Interestingly, as is noted on the Romhacking.net page, this isn't just a simple sprite swap but features some impressive behind-the-scenes engineering to get a bunch of Mario-themed mechanics working in the Donkey Kong Country engine. Coin blocks, for instance, make an appearance, as does Yoshi. And Mario has a...
Marc Robledo, also known as Marc Max is the Rom hacking scene, is back again with a brand new colorization project, continuing with the previously announced multi-romhack project "Mega Man Mania". As usual with projects by Marc and his team, we can expect a great quality product in this latest colorization Rom hack, which not only colorizes the entire game, but also features a number of bugfixes and quality of life changes compared to the original monochrome official release. Marc has implemented a full colorization from beginning to end, timing, hitboxes and animation fixes, full hardware support, and also a brand new NES pause screen. The full list of features can be found in the Romhacking.net page for the Rom hack: As with...
References to Street Fighter characters Ryu and Ken have been discovered in the Sega Saturn exclusive Fighters Megamix. The discovery was made by @memory_fallen, who specialises in reverse-engineering Saturn games and coming up with cool hacks and patches to unlock hidden features. Here's @memory_fallen to explain: Previously unknown cheat codes have also been found which allow you to unlock bonus features within the game (this process normally takes around 500 hours), and there's also a hidden "BACKUP DEBUGGER", just like the one seen in the Saturn port of Fighting Vipers. You can also play as the game's training dummy. You can read a full write-up of the findings here.
Recently there's been an increased interest in taking classic and beloved Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) titles and porting them over to its more technologically superior brother, the Super Nintendo (SNES). One of these people, who has already ported quite a few other NES titles to SNES, like the original Megaman and Metroid to name a few, is renowned romhacker and developer infidelity, who has just released a brand-new SNES port, this time taking in the challenge of porting over an NES title that used the exclusive Konami VRC2 mapper, this one being Contra. This includes the entirety of the original games being ported over to the superior SNES hardware, with some slight changes and even MSU-1 music playback. But infidelity isn't...
In 2017, Jon Burton released his director's cut of Sonic 3D Blast, which provided an improved way of playing a game that pushed the Sega Mega Drive to its limits. Since Burton didn't possess the source code for the Sega Saturn port of Sonic 3D Blast, he was unable to apply the same changes to that version of the game. The aim of this hack is to apply some of the stylistic changes of the Sega Saturn version of the game to the Mega Drive Director's Cut, within the limits of the Mega Drive hardware. Namely, this hack adjusts almost every colour palette in the game to match the more realistic/nuanced visuals of the Saturn version, and provides an opportunity to listen to the Saturn soundtrack in place of the Mega Drive's music. Included...
"Ganbare Goemon: Ooedo Daikaiten" ("Go for it! Goemon: The Grand Cycle of Oedo") is a single-player action platformer with light exploration elements and first-person mech battles. It was released at the start of 2001, the same year that would later see the release of "Goemon Shin Sedai Shuumei" ("Goemon: The Successor for a New Generation"). Both were developed by "NOW Production" around the same time the Goemon Team was working on the PS2 revival, "Boken Jidai Katsugeki" ("Mystical Ninja Goemon Zero.") The game draws heavily from the second SFC game, both in gameplay and stage design. It has character appearances from all over the SFC and N64 games. Most notoriously, the soundtrack is lifted straight from "Goemon's Great Adventure."...
