This wasn't the first time that a game starring Final Fantasy 7 characters had voices attached to their faces--see Kingdom Hearts and Crisis Core for great examples here--but with Remake, Square Enix essentially pressed the reset key and recast the entire roster. The actors who helped bring Cloud, Tifa, and the rest of the cast to life have since gone on to expand their resume of work with even more acting credits, and we've rounded up the biggest names below.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches for PS5 on February 29, but if you want to play it right now, a demo is available. For a closer look at what to expect from this ambitious sequel, you can check out GameSpot's feature on how Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is so much bigger than Remake.
Cloud Strife -- Cody Christian
All American and Teen Wolf actor Cody Christian returns to voice Cloud, giving a nuanced performance as the main protagonist of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Since he first took on the role in 2020's Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Christian has voiced Cloud in several other projects, including Chocobo GP and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion. In an interview, Christian mentioned that Rebirth gave him the opportunity to "go a bit deeper" into Cloud's personality, exploring his more vulnerable side as opposed to the stoic and aloof hero in Remake.
Sephiroth -- Tyler Hoechlin
Sephiroth has had several voice actors over the years--including NSYNC singer Lance Bass--but for Rebirth, the Man of Steel from The CW's Superman and Lois TV series is bringing the iconic villain to life. Tyler Hoechlin first voiced Sephiroth in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and has since been heard in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion and Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier. Fun fact: Hoechlin is the second Superman actor to voice Sephiroth, as Superman: The Animated Series voice actor George Newbern gave a calm and sinister performance across several games and the Final Fantasy 7 sequel movie, Advent Children.
Barret Wallace -- John Eric Bentley
Passionate, driven, and possibly the best dad in video games, Barret Wallace found his voice in John Eric Bentley. When he isn't voicing the Avalanche leader or making impassioned pleas about protecting the planet from Shinra Corporation's ruthless exploitation, Bentley can be heard in several other roles. A prolific video game voice actor veteran, he was particularly busy in 2023 with roles in Starfield, Like a Dragon Gaiden, Armored Core 6, and Dead Island 2.
Tifa Lockhart -- Britt Baron
One of the most beloved characters in Final Fantasy 7, Tifa Lockheart is once again voiced by Britt Baron in Rebirth. Another regular in video game voice acting, Baron has also voiced Ada-1 in Destiny 2 and provided additional voices in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Like Christian and Hoechlin, Baron's voice could also be heard in new Final Fantasy 7 spin-offs following her debut as Tifa in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Aerith Gainsborough -- Briana White
Right now, Final Fantasy 7 fans are sweating buckets at the thought of losing Aerith in Rebirth, especially after Briana White won them over with her portrayal of the good-natured descendant of the Ancients. White has voiced Aerith again in follow-up Final Fantasy 7 spin-off games. Since then, White has also been seen--and heard--in Bollyweird, Popup Dungeon, and Princess Rap Battle.
Red XIII -- Max Mittelman
Another seasoned voice actor, Max Mittelman's body of work stretches across dozens of anime dubs, animated series, films, and video games. The voice of Red XIII in Rebirth, Mittelman has a number of big roles under his belt, including voicing Saitama for the English dub of One-Punch Man, playing Nacht Faust in Black Clover, and he even voiced the Man of Steel in a crossover between Teen Titans Go and DC Super Hero Girls. And in case you missed it, Mittelman even had time to narrate a recap video for Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Yuffie Kisaragi -- Suzie Yeung
Yuffie Kisaragi's more prominent role in Final Fantasy has been largely well received by fans, and after starring in the Intergrade expansion, the Wutai ninja is back to assist Cloud in the unknown journey of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This new iteration was voiced by Suzie Yeung, and if her name rings a bell, that's because you've probably seen her name--and heard her voice--in games like Genshin Impact, Star Ocean: The Divine Force, and Live A Live. While her role as the slightly bratty and effortlessly confident Yuffie is one of her biggest performances of the year, Yeung can also be heard in some of the best games of 2024 so far, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Persona 3 Reload.
Cait Sith -- Paul Tinto
Cait Sith is a polarizing character within the Final Fantasy 7 fandom, due to his role as a spy before he eventually redeemed himself, but this remote-controlled robot toy cat gets a new lease on life in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Actor Paul Tinto was in the recording booth for the infamous character, and his name might not sound too familiar. Tinto has primarily acted in live-action film and television, with credits in Sam Mendes' World War drama 1917, two episodes of the thriller Guilt, and as Stowe in the British historical drama Firebrand.
Vincent Valentine -- Matthew Mercer
Matthew Mercer steps into the pointy boots of the fan-favorite character Vincent Valentine, the self-proclaimed "security" guard who hibernates away in a coffin deep below Shinra Manor. A mysterious agent with a secret connection to Sephiroth, Vincent's voice actor is no stranger to video game and anime fans. Mercer has a list of credits longer than Sephiroth's sword, and currently, he's best known as the Dungeon Master on Critical Role, a Dungeons and Dragons web-series that has since expanded into other forms of media. In video games, Mercer has voiced Goro Majima in the English dub of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Ganondorf in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Battlefront 2.
Cid Highwind -- J. Michael Tatum
If you regularly watch anime, there's a good chance you've heard J. Michael Tatum's voice in at least one show. Active since 2005 across a variety of shows--Black Clover, Vinland Saga, and Attack on Titan to name just a few--Tatum voices the rogue pilot of reputable skill Cid Highwind in Rebirth. This is the first time we're seeing Cid in this Final Fantasy 7 timeline, and like the original character, he'll be playing air-taxi to Cloud and friends, flying them around the world in his Tiny Bronco airplane.
Zack Fair -- Caleb Pierce
By now, you'll have heard Caleb Pierce's voice in Final Fantasy 7 games for a few years now, culminating with his main-event role in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion. Pierce has gathered a substantial number of acting credits to his name, starting with 2015's Astrid Clover and expanding through other shows like Roommates, Grey's Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory. For animation fans, he might even be recognizable as Timmy Turner, albeit a live-action version of The Fairly Odd Parents character in the spin-off series Fairly Odder.
Biggs -- Gideon Emery
Gideon Emery has had a big vocal presence in several games over the last two decades, and in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, he reprises his role as Biggs. The Avalanche member barely survived the destruction of Sector 7, and after recovering from his wounds, he's out for revenge in the new Final Fantasy game. Beyond this role, Emery voiced boxing superstar Steve Fox in Tekken 8 and other recent credits include Moon Knight in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Iosef in Diablo 4.
Elena -- Piper Reece
A rookie operative within Shinra's Turks division, Elena is a force to be reckoned with in Rebirth as she's comfortable wielding both fists and guns. The Shinra agent is voiced by Piper Reece in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, who is best known for her work on Nickelodeon's Deadtime Stories and AwesomenessTV.
