Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto have revealed details about the upcoming Donkey Kong Country addition to Super Nintendo World in Osaka, Japan. The Nintendo Direct announcement confirmed the expansion's opening date — December 11, 2024.
We've seen glimpses of the park before, but this Direct gave us a thorough look at what's in store. If you're able to visit Japan when it opens, you're in for a treat!
To enter the new area, you'll walk through the 1Up store and a tunnel lined with rocks and bricks. The expansion looks amazing, featuring palm trees, Donkey Kong's treehouse, and the Golden Temple.
Miyamoto showed us around, including a music game with conga drums where three people team up to hit the drums in sync with the lights. There's plenty of banana-flavored food and drinks to try (and an interesting hot dog with avocado-flavored sauce), plus Funky's Fly and Buy, a shop selling lots of DK merchandise.
Like other park areas, there are hidden features that work with the Power-Up Bands. Donkey Kong Country fans will recognize a familiar challenge — letters hidden throughout the park that you can "collect" and log on the Universal Japan app.
The Golden Temple houses a mine cart ride with impressive animatronics of various Donkey Kong characters and friends. It seems like a fun, laid-back roller coaster — and we're happy to see Dixie there to welcome riders.
The Donkey Kong Country expansion was first announced in 2021, originally set to open in Spring 2024. But as it turns out, building theme parks takes time! At least we now have a firm date. If you can't make it to Japan this December, don't worry — Donkey Kong Country will be part of Super Nintendo World at Universal Florida, opening in 2025.
