The Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown development team at Ubisoft Montpellier has reportedly been disbanded by the company. According to multiple sources, the game did not meet Ubisoft's sales expectations, with around 300,000 players and $15 million in revenue as of January 2024.
Ubisoft had apparently determined the game's fate just a few weeks after its January 2024 launch, making it clear to the development team that after releasing some DLC and cosmetics, "it would be the end" for the project. The team tried to pitch a sequel and two expansions, but these were refused by Ubisoft. The company cited that it needed more resources for other projects with better sales potential, and that a sequel would "cannibalize long term sales" of the original game.
This is a disappointing outcome for what many consider to be one of Ubisoft's best games in recent years. The Lost Crown was praised as an excellent Metroidvania title, but it seems the company ultimately decided the game's performance did not justify continued investment in the franchise.
